Water temp 89 fish not happy

I just got home all the fish in my 90G look very ill after checking every thing I saw the water temp was up to 89. Can I turn the heat down or does the temp have to drop at a slower rate.

Water temp is down to 84, the fish are breathing much easier, time for me to go to bed

I hope they make it!! I would just turn down the heater to what it should be and increase the surface movement if you can. Its sounds like they will be ok if they are looking better.

The warmer the water, the less oxygen it can hold. I agree with KcMopar, increase surface movement (lower water level so an HOB filter spashes more, or add an airstone or two) if you can.

Update: The heater is a Aqueon Pro, But the heater wasn't the problem, I was, I had to catch a fish Sunday and must have bump the control, it was turned all the way up. I hate admitting to stupid things but some times you just have to. But thanks for the replies.

It happens to everyone at one time or another. I'm sure you will be extra careful next time to check the setting after lassoing fish next time!

Are the fish ok now? Hopefully it was just stressful and nothing serious and you caught it in time.

One of the older angels is puffing a bit but rest of the fish look and ate good tonight. I will update when I get home in the morning

Keep an eye out for stress pests like ick from the rapid temp change. If you have fresh water the temp should be in the 70's. 74-78 always seemed to work best for me. Any higher and the oxygen levels would be lower than optimum as Orange cones mentioned. Increased water movement always helps turn over the water at the surface where most of the oxygen enters the water. (air/water interface)

glad everything turned out ok...and glad you noticed...i had a heater go wack on me and temp got up to 92iish...fish were not happy and heater went to trash.

That is our first severum we now have 3 greens 3 golds 1 lemon 1 red and 1 red shoulder but she is still not showing much red yet we also 11 baby red shoulders about 1.5 ''

The fish where very slow to eat today I sure hope it's nothing to worry about, I will do a complete water test in the morning and post, I just fed them so I know I would get inflated readings now.

Fish still not eating good, but they do eat.

water test results using master kit. ammonia <.25 nitrite 0 nitrate 5.0

using test strips --------------------------------nitrite 0 nitrate <20

Add extra aeration and some Prime. You can bind the ammonia (turn it to ammonium) so its not hurting the fish.

I added another dose of prime and the fish do seem more active. now this would also help if I'm having a problem with metals right.

Yes. The metal binding is perm, not temporary, but with water changes, you will eventually elimitate them from the water column.

Should I pull the plants out of this tank and sift the gravel, I cant figure out where the ammonia is coming from, my only thought is that the Geo buried a sick or dead fish, he moves a lot of gravel in a day.
