So it may be a little bit (month or 2) before I can do so but I would like to get a 30-40g tank for my goldfish (preferably 40 so he can have a friend) but not sure where to go. Our 10g went for prettymuch the same price everywhere in town. Whats the best store (physical or online) to go to. Or is local non chain the way to go?

My suggestion would be Craig's List. You never know what you will find - people get tired of the hobby or move, etc. and often there are some very good deals for equipment that has had very little use.

Do you have a Petco in your area? Many of them are running the $1/gal sale on tanks. Other than that, watch for good used ones like Thyra suggested.

FWIW, the regular price for a 55g is ~$120 at big box pet stores. They're less than half price during the $1/gal sale.

Gonna have to watch for used ones unless i come across some extra cash quick... unfortunately i don't make much so not out of my ability just going to take some careful watching and good timing... luckily garage sale season is starting soon!

Just be sure the tanks are not reptile tanks - their structure isn't made for water pressure. I just checked on Craigs List in Seattle are and found one ad for two 55g tanks on one stand with all equipment for $75. Ad said one was acrylic - also bring your van

I getcha, but a 20 or 29g for $20 and $29 is awfully hard to beat, even well used. Atleast it is in my area. People want $100+ for a used 55g. Not sure what they actually get for'em, but I'm sure it's not $20-30.

No, I knew your were in MI, just wanted to show you there are possibilities. I did notice in my quick look that there is also such a thing as an "aquarium co-op" - you might try Googling that term and/or resale and see if anything shows up in your area. You could also advertise on Craig's List - just remember any warnings you have heard about dealing with strangers alone.

I got my saltwater tank off craigslist. i got it a few years ago and still use it today. it's a good option. i constantly see 150 gallon full setups for around 200 on there. hard deal to beat. but other then that i would say a local store. i try not to spend money at any petco or petsmart if i can get away with it. but i feel the small locally owns stored tend to have better staff and better information. also i like to help local stores. but thats just a personal prefference.

An All-Glass 55G at my LFS= ~$140.

Identical All-Glass tank on sale at Petco = $55.

I completely agree with you about patronizing your LFS. I try to as well, but for most hardware purchases? That's a little bit beyond my pay grade.

i totally understand that freshy, but thats y i said it's a personal preference. and i'm guilty of ordering things online and stuff like that as well. i got the light for my 20 gallon for 60 bucks my lfs wanted 150. it was kinda a no brainer. but i will buy online before i step foot in a petco/petsmart.
