Substitute Bio max media for pre-filter media????

I ordered some pre-filter media by mistake instead of bio max media. (wanted to seed some new stuff for a new tank build).

Pre-filter media :

My question is will it work the same. I mean i've seen people use green sponges, plastic balls etc, for biological filtration.

if it has any sort of pores, it will work for seeding.

You can use plain old aquarium gravel and achieve the same thing. I personally think all the fancy ceramic doo-dads are mainly there to part us with our cash.

while gravel will not have as many pores and surface area for bacteria to grow, I agree, it will still work.

Totally agree, but I've never seen a study comparing the amount of BB per square inch between the two.
