But can you use a heater and keep it around 76-78 degrees? the reason I ask is my wife and I just put a 5 gallon tank in our babies room for him to look at. The setup came with a cheap heater so we threw it in. We have a fancy goldfish in there now, for about a week and it seems to be ok.....

I think you need to do quite a lot of reasearch before you start stocking your tank again.

Pacus and kissing gouramis both get huge, and are incompatible. Pacus really need an extremely large tank. I wouldn't get any fish that get over 6" in the tank, unless you only have one or two of them. To be honest, you sound like African cichlids might suit you well. They're active and colorful, and you might enjoy them. Please feel free to ask questions about stocking and compatability (a new thread would probably be the best thing to do after you've done a little window shopping).

Tim804, did your fish get white cottony patches on their face and fins? My betta died today and I am trying to figure out what happened to him. I think it was some sort of fungus but I'm still not sure, it happened so fast. I moved him into his new 5 gallon hex Wednesday night and he swam around exploring it. Thursday evening I noticed a white cotton-like spot on his face and a bunch on his fins. This morning he still looked the same. When we got home from work his entire face was covered as well as his fins, and some of his fins fell out. I treated with Melafix and salt and upped the temp but nothing worked. I'm just trying to figure out what it was so I can prevent it in the future.

MOsborne05, Yes it was patchy cotton-like substance that started off. Then it ended up covering the fish completely. I'm still not sure what the best solution is. Im kinda wondering myself. It hits so fast and kills the fish so quick that im not sure if there is a cure without the fish dying, unfortuneatly.

Lotus, yes I will research more definately. I was going to move the pacus to a 55 gal. as they grew. I was thinking about african cichlids, they are some nice fish...
