i too have heard that cloumbian sharks are a brackish water fish but he has done quite well in our aquarium. hes like 6" long and has not ate any fish yet :) . the featherfin is apx 4" and i know he would be safe with the shark he's in his own little world (shark is mentaly off). Don't know how this will work but this is whiskers at the top of the tank where he usually hangs out. there were some flakes on top of water for him to eat but this is his usual spot.

Then i was thinking that maybe move fish from 110 gal and make it a discus tank that way i can keep 180 open for bigger fish and maybe a varity. your pics are getting me hooked fuzz. darn you :) .

i'm finding that the only problem i would have with discus is, the ph of my tank is around 8.0 to 8.2 most generaly which is fine for my african cichlids. i understand that the discus like it around 7.0 to 7.4 ph. Is that where your ph is fuzz? if so is there any thing i can do to naturally get it down and keep it there.

LOL, whiskers.."MAKE GOOD CHOICES" are yo watchin tv? thats helerious.
but anyways thats a hella tight setup there...very very cool
brackish fish can live in freshwater but their lifespan is shortened by it.
would yo be movin the 110g stock to the 180g? 110g would be a nice size for discus to. is that a wider tank? the discus would prob like that :)

and wit pH i have heard of discus livin in such high pH cause ideally fish can adjust to anythin for the most part. it just takes a lot of time. my pH is around 6.5 though. i would say if yo can get RO(reverse osmosis) water cause that should have a lower pH too. or like addin driftwood/bogwood should help, and discus like that too. or yo can use chemicals, which im not personally fond of. or peat moss i think too

Prices went all the way from $20 for a 2" to $70 for a 5". Usually the 5" ones ran about $60 each, the 70-75 one was his fire red discus, though i was more impressed with the cheaper marlboros.

ya those are pretty good prices though for the quality
and the red fires i saw come into my store impressed me, i had not ever seen one in person.

i agree. the bg is still sittin in the basement just needs to be put on

and the plants took a little more work than i have time for atm and i dont have the money to go buy new ones right now to get them started. mainly they died out cause the high temps, not very many plants do so well in higher temps witout CO2 systems and i just cant afford that and i am to dumb to figure out how to do the DIY one lol

I know this is an old post, but I'm in the Kansas City area and thinking about getting into discus. Fuzz, I was wondering where you got yours? I've found them at a local store, but am finding them priced out of my range, $60 for a medium pair and $90 for a large pair. I'd prefer to get them small and watch them grow. Is that just what you pay for discus, or is there a better way to do it? I've looked at getting them shipped, but then the shipping gets cost prohibitive too. Hmmm.

Jack is TOP NOTCH! Willie his partner and owner of Sunflower just got out of the business/hobby recently.

Discus_KC is Jack's personal site, he worked with Willie and has the same fish. Contact him for sure. I knew that Mandarin Passion looked familiar Fuzz ;) Jack is one of the few to have Mandarin Passions looking like that in the US.

Good thing about Jack is you know you are getting quality fish. I'd rather pay Jack $60 for 1 fish then $60 for 1 fish at the LFS. But like Fuzz said, usually 2-3" fish will run you in the $20-30 range.

If you can't get in contact with Jack (Not sure that email is up to date? Not sure...) let me know.

Ok, thanks to both of you. Cichlid-Man, I'll probably wait a bit as the tank that would be their home is nowhere near ready. Doesn't even have the top trim piece on yet, but once I get closer to actually needing them, I'll be sure to contact him. Fuzz, I currently have a 55 gallon community tank that is still cycling, but I also have a 46 gallon bowfront that I want to set up as discus only, with maybe a black ghost knife thrown in. I've read that discus are one of the few fish that make good tank mates for them, and vice versa. So, in the 46 gallon, I'm thinking maybe 4 to 5 discus and the ghost knife, and perhaps a BN pleco just to keep the algae under control. That tank is the one that's dry at the moment, so this wouldn't be happening for a bit. I'm open to any suggestions or thoughts on my general plan as well. Thanks for getting back to me.

the bgk IMHO is a great add, i love mine in my tank and he doesnt mess with the discus at all
but he will eventually get to big for that size tank, thankfully their slow growers

and i would say that would work fine, try for 5, odd numbers are said to do better
