I've got two things to add here - first up, Aulonocara males can be put in the same tank - I've seen this work - provided they aren't all the same type. And secondly, yeah - ok - maybe Mbuna are a bit more aggressive than Peacocks, but they are equally agressive to all fish, Mbuna and Aulonocara alike, so there may be exeptions to the "rule" here.

Although Peacock females are certainly more drab than the males, not sure I'd describe them as grey or silver. Got some albino red rubin here that look like striped goldfish with a bright turquoise top fin (males) the females are just kinda "washed out gold"

A matter of prefference obviously, but from experience I'd still go for peacocks...a bit more character to them

Well, Mbunas and peacocks can be mixed. Yellow Labs are actually a good mix with them. They are omnivores and can tolerate the higher protein diet. Some Zebras are omnivores, some are herbivores. It depends on what species you are going to mix as to whether it would work. Socolofi are herbivores. Aulonocara (peacocks) are carnivores. Too much protein for a herbivorous Mbuna and you get bloat. And by the time you see it, it's usually too late. Dead. Peacocks also are not as active or aggressive, usually, as Mbuna. You would just have to be careful what species you put together.
