two more questions:
1. which arrangement of the media is the best?(shuld i put the floss on the top or on the bottom or what?)

2. does the zeo-carb (carbon and ammonia + nitrite remover) work? does it accually remove ammonia and nitrites?

thnx

Hawk... 1. Really doesn't matter... 2. I doesn't matter if you have an established tank because the good bacteria in all of your filter media will take care of all of the ammonia and nitrite in your system. I wouldn't waste the money on it.

Kane... They're not the same, but very close. AC and Whisper are basically the same, with a little different designs (and AC usually get better reviews than Whisper)

Kane - In a whisper, the water goes through the white first and then the black. The black should never be changed or rinsed out. That way you can change the white part without losing all of your bacteria (although I dont usually change those either, just rinse out). A biowheel is a completely different moving part of a filter...a 'biobag' is just what Whisper calls their filter cartridge.

Bigred - They're both HOB's...thats kinda what I was after. They have a bit of a different design but for the most part work the same.

I have a whisper and want to upgrade to an Aquclear. I have the AC110 in another tank and its defiently alot diff. than the whispers. Whispers are terrible in terms of biological filtration and can't be customized much. The AC's I rank just after the bio-wheels in biological since the bio-rings are very good and porous and dont need to be replaced often.

Froggy: I gotcha; I was just refering to their particular HOB design;)

Kane: In theory you shouldn't have to. In experiance, I found with my old whisper 20-40 that I would have to rinse it out about once every two weeks. I'd just take it out, and shake it around a bit in a bucket of old tank water.

I thought it was pretty funny; I had to rinse the foam once every two weeks, and the bag two or three times a week... All the while, the AC sitting next to it would go for a month or more.

No...you shouldn't ever have to rinse the black one...or even touch the black one really. any gunk will be caught by the white cartridge...thats why you rinse that one out.

Sure as long as your black one hasnt been touched. The whisper is still woefully inadequate for biological filtration...I have the smallest model and just shoved some bio-max rings in.

Iv been thinking- the whisper economy 10 i have is suited for 5-10 gallons? Something like that with a 90gph flow rate. Its standard is the biobag, with the aerobic frame for main bio-filtration. Well if one aerobic frame is sufficieent filtration for a 10 gallon tank than there should be no problems after adding biorings right? Each bio-ring it says has 10x the biological surface area of a frame and i ahve like 8 in there-80x. Of course realistically not all this is usable alot is clogged so just say 40x. Thats still alot. So my water parameters in terms of ammonia/nitrites should be no issue even if iv got it a little overfed, or overstocked or plants decaying right?

reply to hawk

i have been using ac 300 for just over 2 yrs, now. On one of the forums, it was suggested to use sponge on bottom, filter floss in middle, and sponge on top.......my water is crystal clear and has been ever since......i just rinse the sponges in a bucket, every 2 weeks and replace the filter floss, as it is so cheap.

As far as zeolite and carbon, i never use the stuff, (havent had a reason to, but do keep some on hand, just in case).....HTH
