You are all making things wayyyyyyy to hard.

1) put small end in bucket
2) put big end in tank and let it fill with water
3) invert big end and lift up until water starts to flow down the hose (or is over the tank rim)
4) quickly place big end back in tank

No fuss, no fish poop in your mouth, no wiggling your siphon back and forth

If that actually works, I'm going to feel like a world class dumb-a** :D

Trust me, it does. I do all of my small tanks this way

Only time that it will cause you problems is if the water level is really low. Still possible, just have to be a little quicker getting the siphon back into the tank.

I can't believe that there were two pages to this thread before someone mentioned it.

well, when my sister's ADF croaked today (yes, pun intended... sorry...:D), determination kicked in...

and i feel so stupid for not getting how to use the gravel vacuum for so long - because it was so easy!! i didn't even have to bother with buckets or anything, because her tank is right by a window, so i just stuck the hose out the window (and watered my mom's poinsettia, lol). i used some kind of combination of wiggling the tube and just lifting it, like dogdoc said... whatever i did, it worked like a charm!! :D

i did a HUGE water change - about 75%. i was practically gagging at how much waste was coming out of the gravel!! i'm definitely going to take over maintainence of her tank, at least until she starts doing it herself (i'm trying to give her a break about the whole thing, because she's going through some personal stuff right now). hopefully it didn't shock the fish too much, but they'll be much happier now in their much cleaner tank. :D (though there was so much gunk that i'm going to do another major gravel vac session this weekend, and i'm sure it'll be pretty gross still..)

so thanks so much for everyone's help. i feel like a dummy for taking so long to get it, but i'm glad i finally did!!
