At this time I have 8 bettas in my room each in a 1 gallon jar. They are on my night stand. I fear that one of these mornings I may accidently drop my alarm clock into one of them. (Its a little battery powered digital clock so it will wake me up even if the power goes out; which happens too often in power hungry California) The good thing about having bettas in the room is that they don't need filters, also I can carry them to another room to do water changes or clean them.

I keep my 60 gallon in the living area just outside my bedroom. The air pump was also driving me nuts, so I connected the air-pump to the same time-switch as the lights. When the lights go out, the air-pump stops. When I first did this, I was expecting the fish to be gasping at the top of the tank the next morning, but they were fine.

The canister filter runs 24/7 though, and it seems that the spray-bar from the filter creates sufficient turbulance on the surface to enable the fish to survive during the night without the air-pump.

Somonas - I was wondering about that (whether I need the air-pump). The tank is fairly deep, and I was wondering whether the spray-bar would be sufficient to act full-time as the turbulence-creator, instead of the pump.
