Neons are not that hardy... I lost several as a rookie... and then lost many to a devilish danio.

A small tank and/or a beginner will certainly kill several neons.
Even after I finally had an established stable 10 gallon as a beginner, my neons began doing well but never seemed to school.

Ive had my 16 gallon bowfront fully stocked with 3 different tetra for several months... everything is very healthy no loses at all. The truth is I only wanted 5 each of the neons and glow-lights. I bought more expecting to loss some. But not one had died. The tank is a little more stocked than I had planned, but everyone is healthy.. Im not going to complain.

And even though the school is not tight, they do stay grouped... its just hard to notice in smaller tanks.

I never noticed it till every thing was moved into my 16... I still think that 16 is a little small if you really want to appreciate the schooling qualities of community fish.

Anything under 10 gallons should only house a betta IMO.

The bottom line for neons from my experience.. they need a good group, a little space, and stable established water conditions.
