The tail is "grown" that way by severing the caudal peduncle
For those who do not know..the caudal peduncle is the part of the tail between the dorsal fin and the tail fin.

JW, you know how much I respect your opinion, but having kept this fish I know for a fact that the mouth's inability to function has nothing to do with this fish being able to eat and live a normal happy life. Yes I will give in to the fact that the mear hybridization of the said 4-5 species it takes to produce them does indeed make for a high mortality rate. Hopefully through selective breeding we can make them a more sturdy animal. This will take a lot of work and some time. Personally I see no difference between this fish and what we do to dogs.

Fin cutting isn't very publicized, just like dog tail snipping/docking isn't publicized. People know it happens, but since no one is making a fuss about it, people keep it in the back of their minds. Why make fish suffer while you "breed" the deformities out of it? Dogs get stronger when they are cross bred as mutts, fish don't usually fare so well.

Dogs have their tails cut or docked for looks. To explain, some dogs with curled tails or tails that stick up have to have a muscle or nerve cut when they are puppies in order for the proper "breed" look. Other dogs with "mini tails" often are born with longer tails that are simply lopped off when they are puppies in order to have the shorter more desirable tails as adults. So I really don't know what "reason" you are referring to? There is no reason except for looks to mutilate a dog, just the same with fish.

I personaly think BP's are ugly fish, just like goldfish. But im glad you are giving it a good home.

And on the dog subject, i have a dog with a docked tail(rotty). I see nothing wrong with it for 2 reasons. 1. The dog is docked as a puppy when it cant remember. 2. The dog is not harmed through out its life, only for a month, as a puppy. The fish on the other hand is harmed for life, it can't swim properly, and during the process fish actual die.

Have you ever been whacked with a full grown german rottie's tail? LOL There is more than one reason to dock a tail. I knew a golder retriever who broke things on a daily basis with his tail. Not that I am for it, or against it for that matter, I just take them as they come, but I would consider docking a large dog's tail, expecially around kids, tail to the face can't feel good.

I wouldn't say that docking a tail is useless. Several sporting breeds have this done because their tails can get injured while hunting game and it is done for the safety of the dog. I personaly think that sticking a metal rod though a humans tounge or other body part is much more harmfull than wacking a dogs tail off. Only difference is we have free will about it.

Back to the subject anyone?

Well, there are certainly differences between cross breeding fish and selectively breeding dogs. With a BP you are cross breeding multiple species, and cross breeding species tends to produce less viable offspring. With dogs we are selectively breeding certain traits within the same species, and the end result is a weaker animal due to the reduction in the available gene pool size. Different processes, but the same end result... a weaker animal...

(There orion, I transitioned back to the topic ;) )
