Hello everyone, I'm setting up a 110 gal. tank for 4 or 5 Fancy Goldfish and tonight while I was in Wal-mart garden center I saw some River Rock in 25 lb. bags the same color of the gravel I was planning on getting for the tank and was wondering if I could us this stuff instead of the higher priced gravel? I know I will have to wash it really good and maybe use a weak bleach and water solution to help clean the rocks before I use them in the tank. Any thoughts on this? Looking for feedback as I will be setting this tank up next week. Thanks, Dale

I have used some slate rocks that I have found in my yard before with no addverse affects. Just be sure to wash them very well. One thing that I have always heard, but havent tried yet is to add a drop of vinager to the rock, and if it bubbles, then dont use it. Another thing is that depending on what type of rock it is it might affect your PH. If it looks like good rock, then put some in while you are cycling the tank and monitor the levels closley and see if they will be ok before you add any fish to the tank.

When you get the tank setup, post some pics. hehe, my wife loves goldfish and she would love to see a tank that size with nothing else!

The River rock you get in the garned center is the same River rock you get in the fish department only in a different bag. If it's not porus or leaves chalk on your hands when you rub it after you rinse it then you shouldn't have a problem with your pH levels.

Some Pics of tank No Fish or water yet.

Hey Orion here are some pics of my tank and stand set up. I have to wait until April 1, to fill the tank with water as per directions by the tank manufacture. I will post after I get it all set up too. I hope you all enjoy the pics and please feel free to respond with any thoughts or questions. Thanks, Dale

LOL, I hope you are close to 7' tall! Your gonna need those arms to reach all the way to the bottom of that thing! LOL jk.

One thing to think about and I dont know if you might have already taken this into account, but water weighs around 10 pounds per gallon. So that would meen once your tank is filled, that it would weigh somewhere around 1100 pounds! Thats a lotta weight! hehe, just want to make sure that you dont wake up one morning and you tank is gone and a big hole is in its place!

Why did the manufacture tell you to wait untill april 1st? Just wondering.

Yes

It's on the paper that you can see inside the tank. It says that the tank was build on 3/22/03 and that the silcone needs to set until April 1st. before adding water. And yes I'm 6' tall and I need to get on a ladder to reach the bottom of the tank. And the floor has been reinforced for the tank. I guess time will tell LOL!

Heh I had similar concerns with my new 77gal tank. I live in a duplex, and I made sure that the stand rested 90 degree's across 2 floor beams. I went down to the basement and made sure I was lined up perfect. And even then, you can hear the tank settling and shifting the stand as you fill it with water. I've checked mine top to bottom to make sure its ok, but man, it'd be easy to wake up one morning. And see your tank doing a nice Titantic style slide through your floor down into your basement.

No Way!

No I don't think I will be getting in the tank ADAMJ. I'm a pretty good size guy and would not want to chance anything. I will post more pics when I have it filled and then again after I put my goldfish in. Take care, Dale
