Oh no way the tank is definately large enough to house cacatuoides also. Rams and apistos are territorial only during breeding. And even if both were breeding at the same time, with a tank that size it should be just fine.

Id say go for it.

Hey Janlo!

Nice to meet a fellow Canadian; especially one from Montreal; I have two apistos; where are you buying yours from? I haven't been able to sex either but I have a suspicion they are both males; I had to seperate them into two seperate tanks.

Do you keep any other fish/tanks?

hi desi!

i bought my bolivian rams at Aquarius. they also have cacatoides and few others dwarf rams.

the other day i went to Big Al( wich is a nice store) in the west , they also had cacatoides but a lower price... but it's too far from where i live so, i wont be back there for a long time.

i only have 1 tank, ( beside my 2 rams) with neons, golden tetras, cherry barbs, 1 sae, snails...
I wont list my plants in it, cause it would be too long ;)

i also have the suspicion that my rams are both males since they're always fighting ( well most of the time when its feeding time). Thats why i wanted to know if i was asking for trouble if i put 2 other cacatoides with them.

I dont go to Big Al's just because they are in the west island; I'm not about to transport fish for an hour and a half from the west to ville st. laurent just for a small discount... Never been to Aquarius either. I usually always go to Safari (at rockland mall) where I purchased my apistogrammas.

Another REALLY REALLY good place for huuuge selections is Aqarium Tropicale (they have a few locations by I go to the one on Ferrier/Decarie by De La Savane Metro). Although I've never seen them carry apistos they have every other kind of cichlid imaginable and a very well knowledgable (management) staff (their regular employees know about as much as any other lfs flunkie).

well i have another opinion about aqua tropical. I bought my tank there and my hardware, and my first plants. thats it. I think they are not ( well a lot of the staff) competent, not sympathic and there is a lack in the fishes and plants quality.

I'm a plant lover, and when i went there 3 days ago, it seemed worst than ever, all their plants were diying.

Before buying my first tank there, i knew more on the subject than the guy wh was serving me, because i spent time surfing the web about it.

Well that was my 2 cents! :)
u should try aquarius, verry nice! the tanks are clean...

heh; like i said the management staff there are knowledgable and its a feat in order to get one of them to help you instead of the dumb-*** clerks.

I recently through out all my live aquatic plants from my 65gal. Although they were thriving they were leaving behind a lot of biological matter that was filthying up my tank. I'd like to re-introduce plants later; but more selectively.... So where do you live abouts janlo? Go to school or you work?

I live in the Plateau, and go to Uqam in Spanish litterature ( dont know what i will be doing with that though:) )

I'd love to have a cichlid tank one day... thats why i'm looking to have more dwarfs in my community tank, i guess they are the only one i can have for the moment.

For your plants, what biological waste are you talking about?

well i dunno; i'm not very familiar with plant names; but i mostly got this one hardy plant that grows like its a coniferous of sorts; but underwater; hehe.

Anyways my other plants don't do so well and even thid hardy one decays and leaves behind mulchy stuff. The tank looks fine with just rock; I may even add more to give my 20 or so cichlids more nooks to play with.

I went to Concordia University; but now I work for my family business running the Tim Hortons in front of McGill University (on Sherbrooke&University). I use to hang ouy a lot in the plateau; great parties their when I was in college.. hehe

well i've had my cacatoides since I got my first tank; so its been almost two months now. I bought two; thinking I purchased a male and a female. There was too much aggression in the 65gal resulting in the male getting really big and the other one (which now I assume is also a male because they just dont get along) was losing color and staying diminuative/small.

Well I have not found a single resource to tell me how to sex the apistos; the only clue I might have is some photos I've seen of females; their caudal fin is rounded whereas the male has a lyre/pitchfork style caudal fin. I dont know if thats an accurate way to sex them or not; hopefully depthC will have something to say to this; since I know he's attempting to breed apistos.

holy sheizy!!! that is the most beautiful planted tank I've seen. How do you figure that dude cleans his freakin tank? How the hell do you syphon when you have so much javamoss that it takes the place of the substrate? GAWDDAMN I'd love to have a tank like that; but just looking at it is giving me cleaning/syphoning nightmares! LOL

Compared to that tank; my cichlid tank was sparecely planted; and I got rid of almost all those plants. WOW... I really can't even begin to imagine how he would clean that tank.

Me too my tank is only 3 months old, and i got my rams not so long ago ( 1 month 1/2). I dont know wich sex they are, and ive read that females can be really agressive too, maybe more than the males at some point.

i think the carpet is not java moss, but riccia. Wich is worst cause its a floating plant that you have tie to some rocks, and i wonder if the fishes are dwelling in it , so it makes a big mess. But yeah .. its a nice tank:)

Have you looked at the pictures on the krib.com? If you can't tell the difference you either have a fairly dully coloured female or a sub male that won't colour up. I would guess that if it hasn't started to colour up as a male yet the smaller fish is a female that isn't bothering to go yellow as there isn't a male locally. You also haven't had the fish very long really so have some patience.
DO you have a photo?

Well i took some pictures of my bolivian rams.
If someone can tell me if they are male or female, or maybe like wayne said, they havent started to colour up.

they are both exactly the same ( i think). The only big difference, is that one has a bigger black spot than the other.

I took many flicks cause theyre always moving, and its kind of blurry.
