*coily watches as DepthC pulls Janlo to the Apisto Side*

I finally put the smaller cacatoides back in the 33gal amazon river tank with the (Now) giant male Apisto. I'm fairly convinced the smaller one is a female; but still not %100 sure.

DepthC I purchased both apistos at the same time; seperated them; one grew BIG the other still small; safe to say male/female?

Janlo; i moved my two kribs out of the 5gal and into the 29; they seem a lot happier now; swimming about and even chasing each other from time to time. Not sure if they are mature enough to breed though.

Yeah desi that should be safe to say. If you feed them the same diet and did waterchanges as frequent in both tanks it should be safe to say that the smaller is female.

Are they both real colorful or is the smaller one dull and a pale yellow color? Usually apisto sexual dimorphism is easy to tell in cacatuoides. Males have longer developed fins and are colored nicely. Females are smaller, have shorter fins, and usually a yellow/pale color unlike males. So sexing is usually very easy.

There are those times when you have a subdominate male which is a male who sorta looks like a female. This is so that he can impose on another males territory in the wild with out a confrontation and breed with any ready females in the dominate males territory.

Also you might wanna take a look at my image gallery. Its got plenty of cacatuoides images right now. There are images of males and females so you can see the sexual dimorphism. Check out my site : www.apistoexp.com and click image gallery in the nav or just go here http://gallery.apistoexp.com . It should be easy to sex your fish after seeing the images. Good luck.

well the smaller one does show hints of hellow; and her dorsal, caudal and ventral fins have given hints of orange; but everyting DepthC said is also true. Same diet; smaller fins; smaller body size; slight yellow tint; bigger one much more vibrant. I'm hoping against all hopes; we'll see in a few weeks; and i'm gonna go check out tha tpage depthC.

Hints of yellow is good. Orange in the fins would have been bad, but some of the more heavily colourbred females have more colour in the fins. Size, size of fins is pretty tough to tell between females and subdom males. Also as I recall the horizontal lateral body stripe was much beter defined in my females than my males.

aye; its more defined in this smaller apisto as well; although it fades with stress; that's why I had initially seperated the two; the smaller one seemed to have fading color; but after reading a lot on the forums I figure I'll take a shot; put the two together. I wonder if I could take some decent photos with a webcamera and my laptop.. hmmm.....

I've seen the "Back-to-Nature" module before in a freshwater malawi tank; I went to Aqua Tropical on Decarie & Ferrier; they told me they dont stock them because the product is messy/complicated not worth the bucks. I believed them. I still think its but I'm not gonna retrofit my tank just now for something like that.

Maybe if I ever get a 6' long tank; ... mebbe.. muahahaha;

PS I JUST GOT A DIGITAL CAMERA SO PREPARE TO BE BLOWN AWAY BY MANY MANY MANY MANY PICTURES!@!!!

The pictures look good. Your fish all have great color too.

I know you still testing out your camera, but experiment a bit with out the flash. Most pictures turn out better with out flash IMO. Well this doesnt apply for professional photos. Those guys have enough skill to use a flash and get a good picture of their fish. I dont know how they do it but hey it works for them.

Well the male is definately a male but im unsure about the other one. When you get a better picture post it, also try and resize you images to make em smaller, say 640x480. It helps for viewing.

Ypur female is definitely a male, and not even a subdom one. Did you ever look at the pictures in the thekrib.com? Try http://www.thekrib.com/Apisto/A-cacatuoides.html
and look at the pictures, then go up a level and look at some other pictures of female apistos, e.g. bitaeniata to see again the difference between male and female. WHen you think you can see that , try eunotus to see a real subdom male.
