I've had a 30gal cichlid tank running now for about 6 months. In it I have 2 Jack Dempseys, 1 FireMouth, last month I added a Texas Cichlid, and just recently I bought 2-1 male, 1 female convicts. My question is this, whats the probability of my new convicts producing fry? There is sufficient hiding places, and nooks for them, but i have not huge gravel, but bigger than theyre mouths. What might I need to get to make this successful? Thanks for any help.

For your stocking plan i'll suggest a 100gal.

The chances are slim. The tank being so overcrowded, will stress the fish causing them not to lay eggs. There is only 1 thing you can do to make this sucessful, get a bigger tank or change your stocklist.

UGA? Man, need to get a real team....like Clemson  Hehe. Well at least whip the living....(err family board) out of South Carolina PLEASE! *celebrate hehe

You need to put a pot in there because thats where they lay eggs.Use neutral gravel tones, regular brown and the like. Fake plants couldn't hurt. Not sure on temp.

You really don't have to do much. If you got a male and female, chances are you will have fry soon:D

thanks mc, when i bought the tank, the brown is what i wanted, and my wife....if your married, or close to it you'll know what i went through... wanted a lighter blue color, but i do have fake plants, and a rocky lookin thing, but one major problem in my eyes is my lighting! and moneys been tight, plannin for a baby of my own, due in november, i have only an incadescent light, im in the process of finding a flourescent to fit it, i just dont want to spend a ton on the lights.do you think its possible to have them breed in the tank under these conditions? which direction to i need to turn the pot, will an electric yellow cichlid bother them in there? thanks for the help

I don't think the light will bother them(don't quote me).

Put the pot in the back, angle slighty so as to provide the fish with a feeling of privacy, but so you can still see them.

A breeding convict pair will tear up anything in the tank, so bad idea on the yellow.

Fish don't usually mind the gravel color. Some very shy fish prefer a darker gravel, but I don't think you'lll have any problems. :)

If you have a 10g with an incandescent hood, you can get screw-in flourescents for the sockets. They usually make the tank look a lot nicer, they cost less to run, and they don't heat up the tank so much, either.

There are screw ins in the Walmart fish section, which give off a nice light, but you can also get the spiral compacts in the lighting section of Walmart or Home Depot or whatever.

I don't think the yellow would bother the fish. You can have your tank without gravel, if you want to get another color (like natural) in the near future. It's a real pain to change the gravel.

thanks again lotus, ill check on those lights tomorrow, and ill switch the convicts tomorrow as well. i tried taking pictures of my tanks with a disposable camera about 2 weeks ago and the pictures didnt develop, every other picture did, but those that i took of my fish did not, i didnt use a flash b/c i wasnt sure if it would bother the fish, but the lights in the tanks were on, so i dont see why they didnt turn out. any suggestions on gettin a pic on there without a digital camera?
