Keep up the research Firebug, I think a 20g would be viable for one pair and you'll need a strategy for dealing with all the fry! Got any hungry mouths to feed?

C-man, not disagreeing about their reputation which seems to be well deserved, just saying they're not called convicts because they're aggressive but because of their colours. Just so the penal reform league don't come down on us! ;-) Nah, to hell with the penal reform league, they're called convicts because they're striped and aggressive! :p

You cant say a pink convict is called a convict because of its colors. :p

Honestly, my con would kill anything that was dropped in the tank - he loved home raised feeders. :)

Guess what?! :p I didn't have to use the "accidently got a stand for a 20 gal." exuse...I asked my mother...and she doesn't care!!! Now, I just have to save up for it..:( and for the new stand..which was the reason I was thinking about convicts..YAY! I'm so excited!!:p

wow chichlid man--i hate dealing with genetics...so confusing
so what i understand is cons will breed in a 10 but its morally wrong to keep em there? how do you determine a mating pair? do u have to buy like 6 and take 4 or so back when its obvious u have a pair? *confused*

LOL. Well to get a pair best thing to do is buy 4-6 small ones and raise them till you start to see a pair control the others. Then take the rest back. Some people see it as wrong (keeping them in a 10gal) but i say its ok. Matter of opnion. And size of your fish.

Oh and i love figuring out genetics like that. Finding different strains and see when crossed, which strain makes what. Especially in Discus.

Ooohhh..discus....*slobbers* I love discus! Unfortunately I can't keep them.:( I don't think my 50 gal. is big enough-and I have fish in there already!:p LOL. My mom did that with swordtails once....she got one really ugly swordtail!:p but I guess the swordtail had a great personality, cuz she kept it! Just gotta be careful when dealing with genetics!;)

Uh oh..:p I have to be careful discussing the matter of a 20 gal. with my mother quiet..She likes to try discouraging me, so a 20 gal. is not quite definite..:p I'm going to do my best tho!;) Got to thinking about it..What if I didn't want to breed convicts? Would it be ok to get 2 males or 2 females? ( I don't like keeping them singly)

5 discus?! Dang! I shoulda discovered discus in the beginning!! Well..there's an idea for when I either lose all the fish in the 50 gal or when I move out and get my own place, and get another 50 gal! :D I thought the same about female convicts. I might decide just to get a couple of females, I don't think I could deal with all the fry that come from a pair...I'm so fickle! :p

breeding Cons...

I thought Pink Cons were/are so pretty. I had to have some. I got 4 small (bout 1 inch) put them in a 10 gal. for *Q* time. In about 2 weeks I found a corner with MOM and dad! Yup lots of fry:D When some one asks HOW to breed Cons....say just add water:)

Any way I keep mom, dad, and fry in the 10 gal. They did fine. Moved mom and dad after 6 weeks. Left the fry to grow out. Here is a early pic.

Thanks, ladyhawk, beautiful convict you have!:) I might just go ahead and try to breed them..since I can only have 2 convicts in there and nothing else. :) I got the tank by the way..Being set up as we speak!:D
