hun was it purchased at like petco? if so they will return it for you they will just swap it out of a kit with out too many questions (when they ask how long you have had it just say a "few" weeks dont say two months lol)

i may have returned a five year old powerhead there once that sucked up a rock and broke i might have said i had it for a few weeks and they did exchange it for me (retail on the head was eighty nine dollars)

with the filter like that they send it back to the manufacturer and trust me dont feel too bad their profit margin is huge and they have screwed plenty of people over in the past :)

Well, nanu. Like I said, I got the kit as a christmas present. It was an Aqua-Culture Starter Aquarium Kit 10 if that helps. I think that my dad got it at Walmart though. I looked at my filter, and it almost looked as if it overflowed. I'm going to change the filter cartridge and see what happens.

take the filter into walmart they will break a kit open and do an exchange for you. Walmart is pretty easy to deal with for returns as is petco/petsmart

they will just send the kit back out with the bad filter to the manufacturer

if you can't produce a receipt and just want an even exchange they will be happy to do that. (well happy isn't the right word but they will)

When you go in walk up to the service desk and ask to leave it there for an exchange, grab a cart go back to the fish section and grab a kit, then put on your "negotiation pants" and go back up front with the new kit tell them what happened and that it was new and they will just break the kit open and give you the filter (they may need to call a mgr over but they will do it)

if the filter has calcium buildup on it take a permanent marker and black the white spots out before you return it ;)

lol!! Thanks nanu!! My filter does have calcium build up. Is there a way to prevent this, or is it to where you have to repeat the process over and over so I should just leave it alone??

no its in your water, not really problematic (other then convincing walmart that the filter is brand new lol)

a black marker will make it look like it was never there though lol ;)

lol!! :) I looked at it and I think it overflowed bacause I may have forgotten to change the filter cartridge. Oops. Well, no worries!! I have 2 more in store!!
Changing the filter media could cause a problem maintaining (or establishing) your bacteria cycle. It's best to rinse the filter pads in tank water you are removing during the water change, then putting it back.

Well, I have a carbon filter, so I have to change the filter media. It hasn't caused a problem so far, but I found that the leak is actually from the back left area of my tank. Today, after school, I'm going to go to Walmart or JoAnns and get some silicone.

the manufacturer says you have to change it but only so they can sell you pads

ummm get it exchanged at walmart silicone wont hold and you will be back in this mess shortly if you go that route

walmart sells aquarium safe silicone in the home improvement section

Ok, well, i still need silicone. It's the frame on the bottom of the tank that's starting to become unattached. The inside is still sealed, but the water is leaking out somehow. I'll just silicone the bottom, wait a few days, add water till it's half way full, leave it for a day or two, then see if it leaks. If it still leaks, I'll post here, but if it doesn't then I'm setting the tank up again.

then put the whole set up back in the box and go return it to walmart for a new one. if you don't have a box just lug the tank and filter set up in there dry they WILL exchange it for you

Enough silicone to "fix" the leak is going to cost you around 10.00 they sell 10 gallon tanks (with out all the junk) for 12.99 at walmart

I promise this will be a reoccurring problem, walmart will exchange the set up for a new one for you if you just bring it back in there.

Another option would be to buy a new one, bring it home put the old one in the box and return the whole thing for a refund of your money (god im a shister)

walmart however is the axis of evil that i cant seem to avoid so i dont have a real issue with doing this to them
