Even if you don't believe a fish can really be happy (and I do, I hope mine are), you have to admit that some fish can be very unhappy. Like those 10 inch ID sharks in a 10 gallon...

I don't think emotion has anything to do with intelligence, no matter what scientific studies say. I mean, there are people who have the same brain power as fish (if not less) and we wouldn't keep them in lesser living conditions just because they can't show happines. Emotion is a complex thing, and I'm confident that it's not limited to humans.
Just because something can't show happiness by laughing or smiling or other personified means, doesn't mean it can't feel it. and just like other animals show happiness (purring, tail wagging, etcetera, fish do, too: vibrant colors, more activity, the way they interact with other fish...)

But this is for another thread.

dude, I'd readily join your DNYO group if you'd take down that political banner from your signature. I might even get an oto....or two....or more......

This is a fishkeeping forum, who gives a monkey's toss what your political or religious beliefs are? Why shove them in my face?

Henry:

Oto is abbreviated from Otocinclus, a genera of Loricariidae (sucker-mouth catfish). More information can be found here.

Fishdude:

You reason that since my otos are in planted tanks where there are plenty of places where they feel secure is why they seem to be more independent (as you put it). That makes some sense since schooling is largely a defense mechanism that fish use to lessen the likelihood of individual predation. That being the case, wouldn't it stand to reason that if they are hanging out in a group, they feel threatened and are therefore uneasy and thus, defensive?

While it seems that otos can be moderately hardy, often they seem to be in a weakened state when they are first purchased, probably from the combination of shipping induced stress and lack of adequate feeding prior to being sold to the consumer. It seems that If they survive the first week or two in the tank, they often last quite a while (I haven't really figured out how long is typical, though). I have had several die on me. One tried to do a Nemo and got crunchy on the carpet. One committed suicide via Python. 2 died for unknown reasons during the first week I had them (probably for the reasons I cited above). 1 inexplicably died after having it for about 3 months. Now, if you want to talk about hardy, let me tell you about the tiger barbs I had for about 4 years....

I think the political signature is nowhere near as bad as advertising on a signature.
...we'll have to mark that one down to cultural differences, Brits tend to be less comfortable with evangelism but an American who's not comfortable with advertising...that's gotta be a first, your life must be hell! LOL

on topic note: otos are great! i have 3 in a 20g, and they're a lot of fun....even if they don't eat ALL the algae in that tank!

on sigs: i don't care if its an ad or its a political statement, but i can't stand REALLY LONG sigs!! i believe the limit for MFT is 10 lines, yes? a couple people in this thread have sigs that are too long (and of course an image counts as several lines i would think in addition), it's really painful! but no one enforces this rule!

dethjam316:

i'm with you on the signatures... some people take it WAY to far. one clever saying, "bios" on a few tanks, or a link or two is about enough to not be annoying.

whoever has that huge photo of a freakin' dragster needs to be reprimanded. as does the overdone A.B.B. offender.

there's my 2 cents.

OH, and my amanos will slow wittle away at hair algae.

you CAN switch off sigs if you want...go to your user cp then go to "edit options" then scroll down until you get to the "Thread View Options" area..."Show user's signatures in their posts?" is the first one under thread view options

but i decided to take out all the bush stuff from my posts...sorry if you didnt like it being there. it made my sig pretty long...so yeah.
