I would try boiling every once in a while if I can get hold of a big enough pot. All this does is expand the wood so that water can get in and speed the process up a little. Good luck with it

If you check out my yahoo album, you will see a large piece of wood in the tank. I found it in my parents forest, brought it home, scrubbed and cleaned it, boiled it for 30min and put it in the tank. I was fortunate that it could wedge into the tank so floating wasnt a problem. The water turned brown for around 2 weeks I think! But mind you, i also do 50% weekly water changes. Now, the water is clear. I think it does depend on the type of wood.

http://www.aquariumdriftwood.com is where I bought mine, I'm going to be buying two large pieces there soon for my 55.

It gives the water a *slight* yellow tint, which is much more natural looking I think.

The best thing about their driftwood is that it sinks naturally, and you don't have to worry about boiling it.

If you do go the route of finding it yourself on the bottom of a lake, don't let it dry, or it won't sink ;)
