What am I doing wrong???

I have gone through no less than 7 shafts for this filter! They are small, thin, white ceramic things and each time I install a new one it snaps and breaks and I can't get it to work! Should I order a whole new propeller assembly or am I doing something wrong? I've spent about as much on replacement shafts as I have for the while filter in the first place  I must be doing something wrong, here.....I have had this filter for two months and still cannot get it to work properly!

Kelly, I havent had any experience with that brand and I havent read thru this thread until today. That sucks I know the excitement of upgrading then the disappointment of not being able to set it up the day you planned, I personally would try to get them to send you a complete replacement.

I'm thinking you should push for a complete replacement at this point. My 2213 still has it's original shaft so there's probably a problem here.

Just wondering though, could you go through *exactly* what your assembly process is when the shaft breaks? Just want to cover all the bases. :)

Not sure if you have followed my canister filter review thread but I would like you to add to it with your experience on Eheim when you get time.

Also out of curiousity where is the filter made? The reason I ask is I am wondering if there is a difference from an Eheim built in Germany to one built outside of germany.

Hooray! After emailing and emailing eheim, with no response, I emailed Aquarium Guys last night and asked them "what can I do about this obviously defective unit?" They replied promptly & apologetically & are going to credit me for the cost of the eheim...and I ordered a rena filstar 2 from them for a replacement! GREAT customer service from Aquarium Guys I gotta say. I would grade eheim's customer service with a big fat "F" *thumbsdow They might have a reputation of being the be-all end-all filter manufacturer, but they certainly, in my experience, don't back that up with customer service.

Plus I got a nice discount from Aquarium Guys on my new filter, too! :D

Freshwater and Saltwater Aquarium Supplies at AquariumGuys.com <---go shop there....NOW! PM me for the MFT discount code to get 8% off!

YAY!

The Rena Filstar Xp2 got delivered today, setup was a snap, it's running smoothly & quietly I am so happy!!!!! :D I added some bio rings to it so in a few weeks it should be biologically populated so I will finally have a functioning canister filter!!!!

Wow what a difference a canister filter makes! It's only been running about 24 hours and the water is crystal clear...I don't think I've ever seen it so sparkling, I could watch tv through it :)

Any advise on how to make the hoses stay straight? The intake hose bends about halfway shut near where it connects to the canister. I was thinking of maybe dismantling a wire coat hanger, cutting the wire to size and taping it to the hose to keep it straight? It's still running fine, but I can tell it's affecting the water pressure cos when I straighten it out the outtake whooshes and lets out a nice pressure of water.

Glad to hear! See, not all of us are totally nuts :)

As for the hoses, sounds like you left them to long and didn't cut enough off of them. For 'best' performance the hoses should be as straight as possible. It always made me nervous cutting the hoses because I was afraid if I moved the canister I wouldn't have enough slack in the hose to hook it back up, but just pick a good spot and stick with with it. If you do need more hose, you can order it cheap.

And you can pick up some poly fill quilt batting from a craft store or wal mart in the roll for mechanical filter media. This is super cheap and really easy to work with. Just cut it to fit in the basket and away you go!

Orion, I gotta admit, I was scared to further cut the hoses...but on Friday I measured twice, and cut once...and it's been running fabulous all weekend!

two questions:
1. has anyone ever broken one of the clips on the top of the canister? I think I was a bit overzealous filling one of the compartments with the bio-rings and broke a clip while trying to situate the top back on the canister shell, which put the filter out of commission for a few days while I awaited the replacement part (by the way, if you rena owners need replacement parts I recommend Rena Aquarium Products, Fountain, Pond and Water Garden Products, plenty of selection and quick shipping!)
2. What direction do you guys point the spraybar? upwards, downwards or straight out? I've been pointing mine upwards cos I can SEE that it's running by the ripples on the surface (it's so quiet! sometimes I wonder if it's running at all) and also it seems to circulate the water back to the filter intake better. Or - does it really even matter?

Hey you and me both. When I setup my Fluval for the first time I probably ran the stock length of hose for at least 8 months lol. There certainly is a little bit of a learning curve with canister filters compared to the convince of power filters, as well as getting over the stigma and the 'OMG what if I do something wrong' factor. But really there isn't much too it, and well worth the extra setup time in the end :)

Knock on wood, I haven't personally broke the clips off of the three I've got, but I from what I've read on other forums this isn't a real uncommon occurrence. I thought I had a few times, but I really just popped them out of the 'teeth' that hold them.

I've actually got the spray bars in my 75 pointing in different directions. Since the bar that came with the Rena is individual pieces, I'm using three pieces to make the spray bar and I have each one in a slightly different direction. The section next to the return pipe is almost pointing straight down around 195 degrees, the second a little further out twords the front of the tank, and the last one futher than the one before it. In my mind I did this to try to give some diversity to the water flow as well to stir up gunk so the filters can get them.
