from your description of the thermometer, it sounds like what i have
i would be worried about glass if anything--btw, maybe run a magnet (how you can do that safely beats me) over you substrate or what not to get the lead balls out (is lead magnetic? i dont think so)--anyone know the longterm effect of lead in saltwater?

nothing, it really has no affect, it doesnt leach or anything, the only danger is some fish or invert eats a lead ball, the reason i know this is i broke a thermometer in one of my tanks, i ended up calling the company thinking i was gonna die from mercury poisining, but they were very helpful and answered all my questions
