Ok well i should be getting my saulosi soon and i dont really know what to feed them, i did buy some tetraDoramin but im not sure if its an ok food for them. I read on a site that you shouldnt feed them granules, but tetradoramin are sticks. Heres what they look like:

So is it ok? I know they cannot have alot of protein as it causes bloat but in the tetradoramin ingredients it has: Protein 46.0%, Oil 8.0%, Fibre 2.0%, Ash 10.0%, Moisture 6.0%.
What else can i feed them?
:D

Definitely not ;)

Firstly, saulosi are herbivores. You'll give them bloat if you feed them that stuff, its too high in meat protein for them. You need to go through your LFS and read the ingredient list on different foods, and find one where the first (therefore, main) ingredient is spirulina algae, or some other type of algae/veggie. It has to be the first ingredient though ;)

The other thing, is those pellets may be too large for the saulosi. Its hard to tell how big they are in the pic, but saulosi have small mouths, especially if you're getting young fish who aren't fully grown. Just something to keep in mind ;)

hummm ok. My cat goes crazy for these pellets so i will probably feed them to him (not all at once) LOL.
Do you suggest flake or pellets? I can get some spirulina algae flakes, is that ok?
I just looked at a can of TetraVeg and even the protein in that is high at 47.0% !!.

I'd look for a good Spirulina food.

Over here in the states i'm feeding mine New Life Spectrum pellets and Tetra Spirulina flakes. Both are being taken like they havn't eaten in weeks and they have no problem with the pellets.

Those sticks look pretty large, they may have trouble with them depending on the fish's size.

What's the first ingredient listed in the TetraVeg? A LOT of foods listed as 'veggie' are still very much meat-based. You can't trust the name of the food, which is why I said you'll have to look at the ingredient list :)

Spirulina flakes will work great...I feed all my herbivore and omnivore mbuna nothing but Nutrafin Spirulina Flakes...its the only thing I've been able to find in town that has spirulina as the first ingredient. They love it. Pellets will work fine, the trick is to finding some that are small enough for the saulosi. I find a lot of pellets are aimed at larger fish.

From the pic you posted, the first ingredient in that food is "fish and fish derivatives" - which is SCARY to me, by the way... - which is where you need to look at, not the nutritional information. See what I mean about most "veggie" foods still having meat as the main ingredient? The names of foods can be very misleading, so you really need to look at the ingredients list, not the nutritional value numbers.

I had a look at the list on the Nutrafin Max Spirulina Algae flake that I feed my guys. The main ingredient (first listed) is Spirulina pacifica, and the Crude Protein minimum is 44%. Keep in mind there are different types of protein, so I wouldn't worry about the protein percentage and instead focus on the main ingredient.

ok thanks sinister. I think i will buy some of that Nutrafin Max Spirulina Algae flake :).
Is there anything else i can feed them? I will use flake as a staple but i think it would be better to give them something else as well, so its a vaired diet

OK i went to the lfs and looked at all the foods, they didnt have very much variety suitable for malawi. I found some Nutrafin max Spirulina Algae Flake Food. There was 2 pots, 1 big, and 1 small both labeled at the same price, so i got the big one :D.
Sinister- the first ingredient on it is Fish and fish deratives- which you said is scary to you!?. On the typical anaylsis it says Protein 44%, is this still ok?

...The first ingredient on the Nutrafin Spirulina food you bought is fish and fish derivatives? (I say its scary because I don't like when they don't specify exactly what an ingredient is ;))

The protein percent is fine, mine is listed at 44% as well. Just a different type of protein.

Lol umm, yes...mine has Spirulina pacifica listed as the first ingredient, which is what I was telling you to look for. There's no point in buying the same brand if for whatever reason the stuff you get over there still has meat as the first ingredient ;) So, if your spirulina algae flake has fish listed as the first ingredient, I wouldn't feed it to your herbivores, sorry ;)
