hm, i would take an emperor over a comparable AC *any day*. for me, the ACs have a real major problem restarting. they just will not prime correctly. the slightest power surge (and i live in FL, so they happen quite a bit!), and i have to poke at the impeller to get it restarted. very annoying. otherwise, it's a quality filter with a lot of media space. the emperor in my opinion is a superior product--never jams up, never has a problem re-priming after a power surge or brief power outtage, decent media area. i can run my emp400 with basically zero maintenance for months without any problems. i run a couple penguins as well, and they are unsuprisingly cheap versions of emperors in many ways. they aren't as bad as ACs at self-priming, but they do stop up more often, you can't regulate the flow, and they seem to be quite a bit louder than emperors or ACs.

oh no, it is. i have seen the same problem on ACs used at my home, at work, and at my parent's house, and i've actually read quite a few reviews on the net and various fish boards that ACs often have this problem. maybe they have worked on it for the newer AC models, mine are all a couple years old...

I really like my HOT MAGNUM filter with bio-wheel. It has the design of a canister, but is lightweight enough to hang on tank. It also came with a very dense water polishing canister. When I put that thing in, even when the tank looks crystal clear to me, by morning, the filters is brown with micro particals. The only down side to it, is that it comes with a vaccum that you can plug into the intake and vacuum straight to the filter, then rinse filter, ie, no lugging a bucket for a gravel vacuum, but I don't have much luck getting it to pull suction. That could be me though, cause I'm not technically inclined.

On another note, I have had nothing but problems with my very expensive Cascade Cannister filter - POS
