maybe i should be more exact....the emperor filters IMO are the noisy and difficult to prime filters, i have actually had no problems with the penguins.

I love my Emperor 280. it's pretty quiet (but then again, i have two powerheads running as well). I mean, how quiet do you expect a big outside filter to be? And the biowheel is the best bacterial filter medium you can use in a tank. I agree with Twinbot...I'm just really impressed with the quality product that I got from Marineland. As for replacing the filters, it costs me 14 bucks to buy a new box of filters every 4-5 months. For the amount of work it does, I'd say thats pocket change.

i also run an old emperor 280 on my 125, so i know both sides of the story:) . they arent BAD filters, just not worth the money IMO.

i have used the same sponges in my ac 500's since the day i bought them, which is better than having to buy the emperor cartridges---plus i hate running carbon.

also the aquaclears are a bit cheaper than the emperors....but both filters can get the job done, it is just personal opinion.

i also dont agree that the bio-wheels are the BEST bio-filter medium you can use. ever used eheims? the fact the air has more oxygen available to baceria than water doesnt make bio-wheel filters any better at providing biological filtration than other filters. the surface area of the filter can only hold so much nitrifying bacteria no matter how much oxygen is available.

Big Al's says that if anybodies prices are lower, than they'll beat the price by %5. They have the Eheim 2128 Thermofilter, the one I want, for $249.99. superfishstore has 'em for $249.59, I wonder if they'll really beat the price like they say. Should I say somethin? Everybody and their dogs' could get Eheim 2128 Thermofilters with such savings!!!!!lol. I like those filters but I'd have to keep on ordering the media, and the shipping is a pain! And what if it broke down, I'd have to get rush delivery for like a thousand dollars! Thats cheap huh?

They are the best for biofiltration, and it is because they spin through the air. This is the last I will say on the subject as it appears to be going no where.

this proves nothing to me. i really am not trying to argue or play devil's advocate here, i am simply giving my opinion on these filters the same as you are.

but yes, this is going nowhere- so i will also leave it alone as well. they are still good filters and do a fine job of providing biological filtration.

I have an Emperor 400 on my 45gal and love it. It's not very loud as long as the tank stays full. My 55gal has a giant Whisper Second Nature on it and I hate it super loud. It sucks (it was free). I just ordered another Emperor 400 yesterday to replace it. My 45 is overstocked (livebearers, breed all the time) and between the Emperor and my UV Sterilizer my water is crystal clear.

Yeah, this is going nowhere unless there is solid data provided. I'm wondering whether anyone has done any scientific research or ConsumerReports-like rating about filters.

The December 2002 issue of Practical Fishkeeping tested some of the external filters on the market based on weightings for features, quality, ease of use, fittings, instructions and value for money. The results:
Fluval 104 - 404 range : 68%
Rena XP : 69%
Eheim Classic : 58%
Eheim Ecco : 65%
Eheim Professional II : 74%
Eheim Professional : 59%
Interpets Prime : 65%

The test was biased in favour of the Eheim filters, but their "best-buy" was the Eheim Professional II series.

Regards.
