It's also a sign of gill disease. My tank has been cycled since September, and ammonia levels are zero.
just because your tank has been cycled since sept, does not mean your ammonia levels are 0.

Excess food left in tank, dead fish left in tank, lack of frequent water changes, putting in chlorinated water; all of those and more can lead to the death of your fish.

If your ammonia levels are always 0, then that would mean you are doing a heck of a job maintaining your tank and fish should not be dying unless your retailer gave you sick fish.

Ok, so since nobody believes me, I will explain thoroughly.

Ammonia levels are zero for two reasons:

1. Tank has been cycled for a long time, the amount of fish has declined, and no beneficial bacteria has been killed due to huge changes.
2. I have tested it and it's zero.

Hopefully, since I have now explained myself, I have made believers out of you so you may now take my word for it.

lol I wasn't saying your tank was not cycled, nor was I saying your ammonia cannot be zero. What I was trying to say was that your ammonia cannot ALWAYS be 0. It's going to build up regularly from the fish in it and the food you feed. You will always have the tiniest bit of ammonia in your tank. The water changes reduce your ammonia levels so its not harmful, but it will NEVER stay @ 0 forever. It's just not possible.
