Types of light, intensity and direction. I will tell you right now I've seen them a damn sight bigger than either of those fish.
The reason they get fat in aquariums is because they're designed for active swimming in big, powerful rivers. Lack of excercise for these piscine couch potatoes

I thought I'd gee this up with a quote from another site on a red tail cats comedy growth rate....

"Mondee (as my two year old calls the sea monster) has grown from about 6 inches to a little over a foot in a month and a half. These fish grow incredibly fast!!! I'm amazed, he makes my Oscar look like a guppy!!"

So the old I'll buy another tank next year, when I move house ... looks like b********s here!

Plecos, too...

The one that bugs me, personally... and it probably is just me... is the sale of common plecos. I remember seeing one in the NY Aquarium which was longer than I was tall (it was latched onto the front of the display and you could stand next to it to get an idea of its length)... The thing was about 6' long! And yet, they're sold as suitable for aquariums... No one mentions that when they get big, they get aggressive and will go after anything of smaller or equal size -- in the case of slow moving Goldfish, size isn't even a factor they just get attacked. The species profile stated that the huge pleco is commonly sold for aquariums of all sizes.

So that's my gripe... *=+P

Arrowana's arer my favourite fish :). It's great when you have a very large tank for them 150+ gallons. My friend keeps one and it is a beast compared to the one in that picture. That's only a baby ;). These guys actually jump out of the water and pull monkeys out of low tree's, I joke you not. The Amazonian kind though, you don't get monkey's in Austrailia ;). Or do you :O?

i saw a full grown pleco at a fish store--i didnt realize a foot long means 12 whole inches...it was so fat too-wow.............the oscars were ginormous too! i saw the fish on the third pic (pangna-something) in a huge square tank and it did not look very happy...sadly pet shops and zoos and public aquariums are turning into dumping grounds for unwanted big fish
