Hello; If this example is indeed what the thread is looking for, it raises a question. Let us say that we as an interested group build up such a listing of suggestions and tweak them over time. The question may become how a fishkeeper can actually find the finished product? Will the final result, if it actually is created, be burried in the archived threads?

Well, here is my answer for beginners.

Get a piece of paper and make the following list:

API Liquid Fresh water test kit
Aquaruium & Hood - (at least 20g)
Filter & media -( for a 30-40g)
Substrate
Heater-submersible compatible with tank size
Thermometer
Some fake or real plants and a small cave or rock - even a terra cotta pot
A vacuum of some kind
A dedicated bucket. (I use gallon container that drinking water came in)
If you are on chlorinated water you will need a dechlorinator

Now write down the cost of each and see if you can afford to start. While you are doing this; make a note of the fish that attract your attention at the LFS and research them. When you are all set and cycled you should have some knowledge about appropriate stocking, the availability, compatibility and cost. Then you can run it by the forum and see what kind of comments you get. I will also recommend reading to get some basic info - Animal Planet has some very good inexpensive books (and you can even get them used) David E. Boruchowitz writes some very easy to read books.
