If the shells are thin (like the whales eye) then boiling them could cause some damage to them because they are so thin (just a guess, not for sure). But the thicker ones like the turbo's would probably be fine.

I've never boiled any of mine. I always just run hot water over them and brush what I can get too. Not a problem with it yet.

Just to confirm what Orion said - I also just rinsed mine off and threw them in the tank. No problems yet! I also have some seashells that my neighbor gave me that she had collected over thirty years ago, but they were kind of grungy - so to be on the safe side I did boil them before I tossed them in the tank.

Have you decided on your fish yet?

not yet, but when i tested my tank last night the nitrite was in the .5-.25 range, so more than likely im gonna get the fish this weekend or next week. will probably be just an on the spot decision about the fish, but the occies color was really nice...how do you like your multies Exister?

I've only had them for a week, but I love them. I have a pretty thick shell bed for them (no sand showing between the shells) - about 100 shells total. They seem to like it, and they've all claimed their own shells except for one little guy who seems to hang out in the pile of holey rock on the left hand side of the tank.

If you want to see my tank layout, check this thread: http://www.myfishtank.net/forum/showthread.php?t=30354

and it is done...went out and got 6 multies this morning. the first thing they did when i put them in the tank: hid in shells...but now they are moving around more, checking out the tank, and setting up their territories. i have this giant of a snail shell that i got when i was in greece and decided to put it in there more as a decoration, but one of the fish has totally taken it over (and it isnt even the biggest of the fish). they seem to be doing well, but first 24 hours always has me nervous. thanks for all your help, these fish look like they are gonna be fun.

Congrats!

Yeah, i know what you meen about the first 24 hours. When I get most of my fish I feel like I need to stay up all night and call in from work just to make sure they are doing ok. lol. Don't really know what good I could do if I were taking a 'fish shift' other than a water change and worring alot though. lol

Confession of a sad Tanganyikan nut:
The day after I got my calvus I actualy called my wife when she was home on lunch and had her check in on them for me.

Yeah, I know. lol

hahahaha, yeah well im trying to do work and before i know it im turned around at my desk looking into my tank. they look good so far, getting more active everytime i sneak a peek. feeding time was nuts too. they would shoot up to get the flakes with some serious force and then shoot back down, something i had never seen before from any fish i had previously kept. i'll try and get some pictures sometime this week, probably on after tuesday, b/c im swamped till then.
