If I were to write an application, kind of like a journal to keep for your aquarium, would anyone use it? When I say journal, I mean like, when you make a water change, different things that go on in your tank, when you add fish, if your fish croak etc.... Just curious, I was going to write one for me to use, but if you guys will use it too, I will write one so that anyone can use it. Let me know!!!

ok......i don't quite understand why you need a vote. Why dont' you just do a journal for you..so you can have a history of your fish tank,  that kind of sounds like a good idea but i'm not good with keeping up stuff like that. but anyway, ya it seems like a good idea to keep a journal, if you want you can post it on here for everyone to see and for everyone to also reply , we can learn alot from it like acclimation, tank cycling, etc etc. sure why not..

We're all for it.  Sounds like a great idea.  Wish we would've thought of that a long time ago, before all the disasters.  Definitely go for it!

To answer RacerFish's question, the reason I need a vote is so I can make a decision to either write it for multiple users, or write it for myself. I don't want to waste my time coding for multiple users if I am just going to be using it for myself.

To answer Neon's question, this application will be written using the ASP.NET technology using VB.NET and C#.NET. Definitely not PHP or that God for saken Perl.

Oi! That's a great idea. I keep a journal of my own already. If you decide to write it for general consumption / multiple users, here are some suggestions off the top of my head (from a web/usablility persepective0...

1. Web enabled - can output the entries into html pages, or as html to paste into existing content

2. Customizable - allow user to customize interface / output html

actually that's all i can think of now ... hehe

Well, here is how I am going to write it. Right now, I am not going to write anything that will allow users to customize the interface. If there is a huge demand, then it is quite simple and I can do it. Also, I am going to give the user the option to allow visitors on the site to view their journal. So, if you don't want other people to see it, you will have that option. You will be able to make your entry and view the journal for each month. You will also be able to edit or delete a journal entry. Since ASP.NET has HUGE capabilities, there will be a lot of neat stuff you will be able to do with this application. I know a lot of you will get a lot of use out of it and enjoy using it. It will take a couple of weeks to write it but I am going to add  a LOT of functionality into it. This includes a calendar that you can view each day or each month. However you choose. I am excited and I hope you are as well. Let me know if there is anything you guys would like to see on this app.!!

Oh yeah. I will also provide the ability for users to download their journal in a text format or comma separated values format. So that they can put it in Excel or any other program that accepts csv files. That will be a nice additive. You will like, me promise.

Thanks for the request Somonas. I will make sure to create this so that if you get a new tank, you can add it to your list, thus, the ability to have a journal for as many tanks as you want!!! Keep the suggestions and requests coming!!! *thumbsupsmiley*

Not sure exactly what it would keep..water change times, filter replacement, ect.

It would be nice to have a spot for when fish were added, current tank occupants, maybe some room to record fish behavior or some spots to take notes on doses of ferts added(or medicine or whatever).

I need one just to remind me to replace the co2, even if it looks like it doesn't need it.

-also, is it possable to have it startup, and popup like Outlook does when you have something to get done tommorrow and then a final popup for due today to change XXXXX
Of course, some people may not want this auto reminder, so a possable place to turn it off.

Sounds neat. *thumbsupsmiley*

How about this:
In addition to the "common" bits of info - water temp, ph, hardness, etc, maybe you could include a function to allow a user to add columns and name them -

So for example the basic download will come with
temp
ph
kh
gh
ammonia
nitrate
nitrite

but will have the ability for me to click a btn and add
"dissolved co2" and start tracking this.

i'm not the most proficient on the back end, but I know enough to be dangerous - this would involved letting the app create another column in the db or some such nonsense, wouldn't it?

basically, customizeable field names would be cool.

=Oh, and if you do write this, pop me an email to breer@attbi.com (after the 11th, email is down from moving), and I will design a sweet user interface for your cool application. It's whut I do all day long. :)

Well, what I will do is when you add a tank, there will be a form that you can fill out describing your tank, what kind of fish, plants, size etc... As far as different behaviors and stuff like that, you could just record that in your journal. But, for stuff like that, we may be able to do something like that for later versions. Right now I am concentrated on version 1.0. But I'll keep that in mind.

Now for the reminder email, that will be somewhat difficult. I would have to write a little VB program that would have to be kicked off at a certain time each day to be run. Which, since this would not be on a server that I own, it would be some what difficult. It would be simple to write something like that, but I would have to go in and run the job every day. And um, I just can't promise that I would remember to do that.

MORE MORE!!!  *celebratesmiley*

Oh boy, why oh why are you people making a fun hobby so...argh! When I worked in the lab -everything- had to be documented in a bound notebook in triplicate so it could be traced bact to whom took a crap that day and forgot to replace the toliet paper...

Personally, I'm through with log books.

I could see where a breeder might want to keep track of stuff such as spawnings, what the parent stock was, offspring survival and that sort of stuff.

But please, no more taking the fun out of my hobby with lab books<G>.

Colsea,

This application is not aimed at taking the fun out of this hobby and please do not portray that thought. This is simply a fun way to keep track of your tanks, how they are doing and the chance to share your progress, or lack there of, with others. Please try to keep an open mind.
