go as big as you can get, 5gals is a lot smaller than 10gal, and with a 5gal you are VERY limited in what animals you can keep and dont even think about fish as a SW n00b. but the biest advice i can give you is READ, READ, READ then read some more.

I have kept 1 gallon tanks, they arent that bad, just KISS, keep it simple stupid. Light bioload and 50% water changes every week. In a 5 gallon you could definetly keep a small goby without a problem.

no, until you have a large tank you dont know what top off is...it is so small an amount small tanks it really is just very easy, plus you only have relatively weak light on there, in the winter it gets a little annoying but still nothing compared to my 40 gallon or 90...
