fish only nano would require tons of water maintenance. i've recently been talking with a reef shop owner about getting a nano and he said that with it, u either want reef only or reef w/ fish. the live rock and stuff will keep the water somewhat stable. w/o it the water will go crazy with just sand and a fish or 2.

You can do smaller reef fish no problem.... it would be just like a reef minus corals. 'Fish only with live rock' (FOWLR) tanks incorporate live rock and fish... in todays hobby most tanks dubbed just 'fish only' usually contain live rock. Its become a basic necessity in the hobby.

Well youd need besides the tank

Heater
Substrate, such as Aragonite
Live rock
Salt mix
RO water (unless your tap is ok... still a good idea)
Hydrometer
Powerheads

Keep up on the water changes to help out with the filtration along with the live rock and theres a start. Goes without saying but check the stickies as they contain useful in depth information on the topics stated above.

i would disagree with that statement...really, much more water maintenance is needed on reef system

basic needs:

equipment
tank
heater
powerheads for water movement
some method of covering the tank (i prefer eggcrate)

other stuff
live rock
salt
hydrometer
test kits

thats all that is coming to mind right now, but if i think of something else i'll post

Depends on what came with the starter kit (I assume a standard freshwater kit? nano kit?) but it would be better to buy separate.

No problem foosball, it in essence it does actually mean that (and used to) but for the most part it contains live rock now.

not sure but MAYBE cleaner shrimp are territorial. also, you could do a mantis... but nothing else would be able to go in the tank. and the wally world starter kits should be fine, but i wouldnt put the media in the filter. maybe you could block it with some eggcrate and put chaeto in there to help with nitrates. since you wont be doing corals, the lighting will also be fine. goby and a firefish seem fine btw. just to warn you though, firefish are super shy.

oh yeah, he posted just before i did while i was typing. sometimes gobies and pistols form symbiotic relationships, so that seems pretty cool.

Okay So an eggcrate does what exactly? And what would you suggest for me todo, put the eggcrate under the tank lid? What is Chaeto and RO water?

eggcrate- prevents jumpers. IMO, not necessary.

chaeto- SW algae that eats nitrates for breakfast.

RO water- water purified by Reverse Osmosis. i use it on my 10 gallon. pretty cheap... i spend a little under $2 a week on it. very good for SW aquariums. NO POLUTANTS. prevents algae, and no chance of chemicals like in tap.
