i think i know what you are talking about...you mean the branch stuff gets brittle right? while this is true, generally if you get thick enough pieces they are ok for a long time. as far as stuff like detritus etc collecting thats lack of water flow and no cleanup crew (so ill check out the algae post)

i would look for some nice "premium" fiji stuff it was my tank...it is kind of like lace rock in structure here is a pic: http://www.saltycritter.com/images/pics/fiji4.jpg

Just bring your salinity up with water changes over a few weeks - mix them at 1.030 approx.
I wouldn't add much more live rock to your tank. If I was I would go hunting round some lfs's for small pieces with lots of hitch hikers.
You don't need to bother supplementing Ca at this point. If you want to up your lighting , you might try a PC fixture and have one 10K and a 50:50 or a 20K
