is it normal for mollies to almost always swim up on the top of the tank huddled in one spot?
also it seems as if my balloon mollie is pregnant as she has a huge belly, but she has not had any babies yet. how long does this take?

Not at all. If you could answer a few questions, those here could help you better.

What sized aquarium?
How long has it been set up?
How many and what kind of fish are in the tank?
What are the levels of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate?

A molly can give birth about every 6 weeks.

the tank has been set up for like a year, but it has been empty. i just got the 3 fish 2 weeks ago. its a 12 gal but it doesnt have a heater, but it stays at a steady 70 degrees. could this have something to do with why they huddle at the top by the light. it could just be too cold.

Look on the bright side, if it is the cycle and I am assuming you havent done a water change then your cycle should be about over. Have you tested the water for ammonia, nitrate and nitrite? What kind of filtration are you using?

Normal behavior for mollies is top to middle of the tank and the male should be actively pursuing any female in the tank.

the tank has been cycled because there have been live plants and snails in it since i set it up. it has been set up for about a year. i havent checked the nitrate/ite or ammonia levels yet. i have been doing water changes also since it has been cycled.
its a 12 gal eclipse tank with filtration above using carbon fiters.

one of the females had ick 2 weeks ago but i treated it with noxick and it has cleared up.

Well snails do little to effect the water quality and until fish are added it may have not been cycled, the only way to know is for you to test the water.

Dont take this the wrong way but do you understand what cycling is?

As was stated above,
test your water for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. it can help answer a lot of questions.
a good test kit that i use is the API Master test kit.
and it might not hurt to read up on cycling a tank just to be sure you know exactly what it is.
good luck and post those numbers

umm im not stupid i know what cycling is.
there have been fish in the tank after it was set up
there was a kennyi cichlid in it for a while and there have also been feeder fish living in it. therefore it has been cycled.

there is no ammonia poisoning because the fish would have died by now.
im not a retard, i used to work at a pet store so i know what cycling is. so stop telling me my tank is not cycled.

you posted in this thread saying "it has been set up for like a year but has been empty" but NOW that we are trying to help you it has had fish in it...get your story straight and get back to us...

i never said i know everything or i wouldnt be on this site in the first place. if you arent going to help dont reply. the tank has has live plants and it had a kennyi cichlid in it for a couple months. then it has been used for feeder fish on and off since then.

Without knowing the level of ammonia in the tank, how can you be certain it is NOT ammonia poisoning? Many fish can last a long time before dying from the affects of ammonia and/or nitrite poisoning.

Staying near the surface huddled together is a classic sign of being super-stressed and not getting enough oxygen. Both ammonia and nitrite poisoning inhibit the function of the gills of fish and can cause such symptoms.

What are your readings for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate? If you worked in a pet store before, perhaps they can test the water for you if you do not have your own test kit.

none of you are answering my original question, so if you cant help please stop replying and saying i dont know how to cycle a tank.
all of the levels are fine.
does anyone have any other ideas to why they huddle at the top of the tank?
im thinking it might just be too low of a temperature because they huddle by the filter where it is warmest.
the balloon mollies seem to be ok now they are swimming around, but the lyretail is still at the top.

We are answering your question.. if it was temp they would huddle around the heater if there is one. The water around the filter is going to have the highest oxygen concentration which still indicates nitrite or ammonia poisoning, just because they are not dead doesnt mean they are not suffering from it. Not all fish die from high ammonia or nitrites. If your tank was fishless for a while between stockings then you have to cycle all over, if there is nothing to create ammonia there no food chain at the microscopic level, remember that nitrate is the last byproduct of that food chain ammonia is the beginning so without a beginning then all above it die.
