What models are the two filters? Is the marineland an emperor or a penguin? The reason I ask if you change the two filters at the same time is because when you change that cartridge you are throwing good bacteria in trash. Tho it is is necessary to replace these cartridges you do not want to do them at the same time. I clean out my two filters one at a time this way you won't stress the bio load as bad and it gives each filter time to catch up again instead of both fighting each other at the same time.

I don't know much about the aqueon but the marine land (if its a bio wheel) has room in front of the cartridge I would recommend putting one or even two fluval clearmax in there. The clear max traps phosphate nitrite and nitrates. I had nitrates at just over 20ppm I put the clear max in and did a 20% water change with a gravel vac the next day I was reading zero.

I think its an emporer. Thank you for that fact. I never knew about changing the filters one at a time. I'm still learning a lot. I've only had my tank for 2 years and its my first tank since I was a kid. Can I find the fluval thing at my lfs or do I need to order it online? I know the fish I have will get big. I plan on having multiple tanks in the future but right now they're only about 3-4inches.

Not a problem glad that i can help if it works out for you. The emperor has two cartridges and two bio wheels where the penguin series only have one of each. The fluval stuff should be found at just about and lfs I know for a fact petsmart has them and they come in packs of three for around $8.

I am a firm believer in over filtration I have an aqua clear 70 and an eheim 2215 running my 55 gallon and it looks great all the time.
