Carbon could work.
I found that my "tanks" smell sometimes as well, but it's not the tank themselves, but usually water I've spilt somewhere that is now harboring molds. I had to shampoo the rug in front of my tank once because I spilt a whole lot of water on it that reeked.
If I feed the fish an especialy protien rich diet such as color-enhancing food, or the catfish tabs, I'll usually get a smell the next day. This is your goldfish tank yes? Sometimes, goldfish smell, mine are usually a bad BO stink, which is pretty funny since my laundry hamper is next to the tank! When the water gets too warm, it smells. If I let it go a day over the schedualed waterchange date, it smells. When I'm PMSing and highly scent sensitive, it smells.
I've never had issues with my biowheels smelling.
Carbon and frequent water changes are a good way to get rid of fishy smells, especially if the fish are healthy and the tank mature.
