Definitely go for it! I love missdixie's oscar the best of all of them on the forum. Guess I lied when I told Jess that I thought hers were the best, lol. They're all really nice!

Virgowolf---where are your pics of Surge and Oscar? Still busy moving? ;)

Who else on here has em' anyway?

Thanks, Katie. My avatar pic isn't quite as 'perfect' as I'd like for it to be because it was taken from a distance last night when the little bugger was 'playing shy' near the back of the tank. He's been watching me a lot today though, so I'll try to get a better closeup later.

Maybe I'll even manage to get out and nab up some decent-sized anubias plants to put in with him to fill in the middle part of the tank better. :)

As far as the anubias go...

I'd add 3-4 larger types, or a whole bunch (like 8-12...almost carpet-like) of petite nanas around the bottom. But, then again, he may like moving them around, so maybe 3-4 larger ones (I like my Anubias barteri v. coffeefolia a LOT, and it's tough, too) is the way to go. Really up to you -- I'm just a little obsessed with nanas lately, because there's this awesome 12 gallon nano at the LFS that's all rockwork and petite nanas, with white clouds, a betta, and amano shrimp. Needless to say, I love the way that tank looks...

Thanks, Denny...now you need one too!
Petite nana looks good, Jeff, but I'd have the same concerns about the oscar moving them, as you indicated might very well happen. For that reason I think I'll go for several plants of a larger variety.

One of my concerns was that I wanted to try to leave lots of floorspace for vacuuming purposes---and a field of petite nana wouldn't allow for this. Then again, its benefits to the tank might offset not vacuuming in that area of the substrate?

I figured with some larger ones I'd have more of a root structure to work with for anchoring purposes, and I could just push the stems/leaves aside with the siphon during vacuuming. Then again, I suppose I'd have the option of mounting them onto the driftwood. Granted, this would sort of defeat the purpose of filling in the middle of the tank where there's hardly any driftwood. hmm...

Anyway, the biggest ones at the LFS appear to be barteri, if I'm not mistaken. I've had coffeefolia before, but I'd prefer barteri in this particular setup, so I plan on grabbing a few of those.

Thanks for the suggestions!

nice looking oscar, mine looks similar. i got it at petsmart too about a month ago i'd say.
he's already started to grow and he even (along with his pal the JD, who's three times his size) takes food from my hand. great fish with great disposition.

Any pics, sclabman?
Good to know that your PetSmart oscar is doing well too.

Katie...yeah, that thing you mentioned earlier about how oscars don't tend to like their surroundings being rearranged is something I'll definitely be keeping in mind. I'll just add the anubias plants and that's it. The small piece of driftwood in the middle might get moved slightly, but that's nothing major. ;)

Ugh, alas, I am still upstairs... my parents want to move my dad's train stuff first, but with all the weather mishaps, the garage is not even close to being done yet, so we have to wait for that to get finnished before we can move downstairs. Everything is kinda hectic right now. I did snap a couple shots last night, none of them really came out well, but when I go back downsrairs I will try to take a couple more. Surge is hard to get a pic of, every time I try to get a pic of him, Oscar jumps in front of him! LOL

Nice little guy you got there, see how Surge got his name now? Your guy looks like he "lights up" too! :D I'll try to get som shots of Surge when he was tiny up till now, that should help you see what will happen with little dude's patterning.

I'll make a new thread, with pics later ;)
BV, missdixie, and Virgo (plus any other oscar keepers on here...) We should make a thread called "The Oscar Club" ;)

That's fantastic, Katie...congrats!
I'll go check out your new thread in just a minute.

'Oscar Club' sounds like an excellent idea!
We'll all have to get into the chatroom sometime and iron out the details. ;)
