Pure was right. It just took a few weeks, but the heros are really starting to color up. Unfortuantly you can't tell it in all the pics partly because of my lack of skill, and the equipment I'm useing  But in a few of them the color really shows.

The picture itself isn't worth much, but you can sure see the color showing though on this one! (just check out the bottom finnage!)

I think these are some of my favorites. I've never gotten head shots look so good before. *SUPERSMIL

This is looking in from the right side of the tank. Ahh, 4 feet of crystal clear water. Makes me thirsty just looking as such. ;)

Yes they are all of the same species. They show different colors not only depending on the mood, but more of the patern and color depends on where they stand in the 'pecking order'. There isn't a lot of info available on these guys yet (its a shame), but from what I've seen, the more pronounced and darker the verticle bars, the lower in the pecking order they are. The big guy with hardley no bars is the 'alpha', or the top dog so to speak. And the next one has more visible bars, and the next one a little bit for visable, and the lowest one has very dark bars.

Personaly I do not belive the bars to be an indication of sex. The other colors may be to a certian exent, but not the bars. I'm still iffy on the sexes, but seems like the males have longer dorsal and anal fins, and the ends trail off into almost a filiment, where the females seem to be more blunt and rounded. I'll still have a while to tell for sure what I have because I want to wait and make sure that they wern't damaged during shipping or anything like that before I start counting my eggs. :)

Thats correct Orion, also the stripes on the face are the other give away. Males get the red markings on the face. Just like normal severums do.

Very nice shots! I almost choked on my coke when I saw what at first I thought was HTH...Close look I realized it was his nostril. LOL!

lmao@ Pure- Oh to be a fly on the wall....covered in coke.

Thanks for the added info as well. You can see from the headshots the first two photo's (which is of the same fish) all the red squiggle lines that the second two photo's are missing.

The water? Well lets just say that's my little secret ;) I actualy don't do anything special. Try not to over feed, regular water changes and filter the crap out of it! :)

I linked my wife this thread to let her see how they were doing. Here is what she wanted me to copy and paste for you.

Jamie:
What are you talking about lack of talent Orion! Those are splendid pictures and you are pretty much right on with how you were explaining them, mood is definitely a color factor as well as food and dominance. I also do not believe the bars are sex indicative as they come and go like the bars on stressed discus. The fact is, they still have settling to do however.

Here are some pics to show how the pecking order has been established among both the males and females in our tank…

Head Supreme Master Hero of the tank:

Head Supreme Master Hero and subordinate:

Dominate Female:

Non-Dominate Female:

Let me just also say, that with the males… sometimes when they are re-establishing their pecking order, you will indeed see multiple males with the nice bright coloring…(already shared this one but using it for comparison)

Thanks phooey, I've actualy had them two weeks today.

Thank Jamie for me for the kind words Pure. :)

You know, untill you mentioned the red lines on the face I hadn't really gave it much thought. Now that I'm home and I looked, only one of the four appears to be a female. lol, even the smallest one has the lines. Looks like it's up to her now, she will eventualy have three to choose from, so here's hopeing she finds at least one she likes. *celebrate

Now I'm off to play with my new weedwhacker :D

lol, well hell Kelly, the weeds won't cut themselves! ;)

Thanks Avalon and C-man, I can tell that I am getting better with the camera. Once I see that I can't use the tools I have any better, I guess I'll start seriously thinking of upgrading. But really, I can't justify paying $500+ just to take better pictures of my fish lol. So I guess that meens I'll stick with what I have for sometime, especialy since it didn't cost me a dime.

According to Pure, who originaly got these fish from Jeff Rapps they are just about as big as they are going to get. The males will reach 5-6 inches and the females a little smaller (correct me if I'm wrong Pure). Mr. Rapps obtained a WC pair, and these are from a spawn they had. Like I said, there isn't a heck of a lot (just about zilch) of info on these particular fish, and the H. efasciatus name I think is more of a place holder untill proper nomenclature can be made for it.

lol, then agian who knows, they may decide to let these keep the name and reclassify the regular severum

LOL I so wish they would get scientific names down. This is one of the reasons (as odd as it may be) I really do like common names. You think cichlids are bad, hmph try catfish.

Indeed Orion is correct. These bad boys are full grown. I didn't just grow them out a bit. They have been in more than adequate confines with top notch diet and water quality for about a yr and a half. They have been in the (now hero tank) 125 for about 6 months and not one of them has grown.

They are a true dwarf severum, even fishbase.org agrees. As accurate as they are..how could you question it.../sarcasm

There are a couple of runts we had out of the original 17. The person we bought them from said that he put the small ones in just in-case they happened to be the females..don't think he knew much about what he was doing. But it's cool they are still nice.
