Hi guys...slightly off topic but where do you buy your ammonia for fishless cycling? I looked at Safeway today and even their "generic" ammonia had other crap in it...I'm going to try Walmart after work...do you think they'll have it?

Hmm - good question. The bottle I used must have been 20 years old. It was Montco® brand Clear Ammonia that I found hiding under the sink. If the bottle says Clear Ammonia or Pure Ammonia then you're fine. Perhaps another supermarket besides Safeway carries it. Wallmart may just carry it.

As far as the chemistry lesson goes...."hmmm" is all I can say. It makes sense....I guess. Never was very good at chemistry. :(

Froggyfox, your local grocery store should have it. I'm surprised that Safeway didn't have it. Walmart might have it. I got my ammonia at the local grocery store. Look for the store brand. Don't worry about the name brands.

And look for the ammonia that says "pure" or "clear" ammonia. That shouldn't have any other crap in it.

Well I guess I'll try Walmart and let ya'll know if they don't have it :) Safeway had two different kinds of their generic store brand...one that was lemon scented and one that wasn't...so I almost grabbed the clear one...but at the last minute looked at the ingredients and there was all kinds of crap in there!

and Pyackel from now on I am going to talk to you about my chemistry questions!! :)

Ammonia, yeah... ugh. been there done that. Someone told me to smell it to make sure there were no purfumes or deodorants. so here I am in the Canadian Tire store, looking at ammonia. reading labels. So I decide to take the cap off. Take a really big long wiff. bad idea. Never do this. you will instantly experience pain and have no nosehairs left.

I guess it was the right stuff. lol

LOL I finally found some. Not at Safeway...not at WalMart...Not at Walgreens...but at ALBERTSONS :) when you find the bottle that doesn't have a list of ingredients...its the right stuff :) and just for everyones information its albertson's brand "Simply Clean."

Somonas...I worked in stables all through high school and know that AMMONIA smell...-=gag=- WHO was your "friend" who told you to smell it?! did you have THEM smell it? lol ouch

Okay Flex26 - I got bored now that my ammonia and nitrites are down to undetectable levels. So I,....(out of the need to feel like an important chemist again) - set out to get a Nitrate test kit. My Nitrates are just a notch above 5ppms. Just an FYI for ya....

froggyfox actually I might have read it on some message board or the Krib.. but regardless, it's strong stuff. I have never actually used it to clean anything thou

the upside is you only have to fishless cycle ONE tank... and then you're done for the rest of your fishkeeping career, unless you somehow manage to kill all of your bacteria. (moving, meds, etc)

i'm sure this is slightly out of context but lately i have seen a lot of talk about fishless cycling and i can't help but to wonder"why is everyone doing a fishless cycle when they have established tanks"now obviously this doesn't apply to those new to the hobby and are starting their first tank.i have never used a fishless cycle because i always keep an extra filter that is overkill just to use as a starter if i start a new tank.after i started my first tank i have kept the filter going.if it fails i transfer the bio-media to the new filter.and if i am planingon a new tank i just use an existing tank to "seed"the filter.with this mehod i have never seen an ammonia spike or nitrite either.the only reason i can see to use a fishlees cycle is so that you can drop a full bio-load at once.now i don't need any angry responses i'm just saying that with all this talk of bio-starters like bio spira and cycle and fishless cycle why not just take the easy path.keep a clean tank, keep a regular mantaince schedule, use a quarentine and you should never need all that other stuff.your filter will always be safe to share on another tank

hahaha - that's good to hear. at least i'm not alone with my nitrate levels. so i guess this proves your chemistry wizardry....hmmm...the harry potter of the nitrogen cycle...hahaha....i'm kinda....inebreated (sp?) right now so bear with me. happy hour right after work with $1 drafts is awesome!! *celebrate

your right catfishmike. if you keep an extra filter running at all times then you're set. you never really need to do another fishless cycle. you hit the nail on the head with the "new to the hobby" comment. but, sometimes i think the veterans don't always think of that method. kinda like being set in your ways. but that's why we have this forum. so even the old school vets can learn. now, i'm gonna go to www.bigalsonline.com and buy another filter....:D

I "seeded" my 15 gallon with some stuff from my 10 gallon that isn't fully cycled...hopefully it will help somewhat. I'm already noticing that only a week into the cycle I have minimal levels of ammonia and nitrites...whereas my 10 gallon took at least a week before any nitrites started to show up. SO hopefully its helping.

Nitrite level still won't go down in my 10 gallon...and I simply cannot find a store near me that carries biospira. -=growl=- I tried the "water change" bit...andapparantly that hasnt helped either.

Bingo. You answered your own question.
If you are seeding a 90 gallon tank with media from a 10 gallon, the ammonia will help to increase the bioload in anticipation of the amount of fish in the 90.
