All my tanks are hooked up to their own individual power bars, and when I'm doing water changes one of the first things I do is turn off the power bar. Now the reason behind this is some 5-6 months ago I had my heater crack from doing just that same thing(water change and forgetting to unplug the bugger).

I know first hand about heaters doing this. When i was a kid, I thought my bedroom was to cold. I stuck the fish tank heater to my bedroom window.

I dont think any of you have seen an 8 year old kid as scared as I was that day!!*twirlysmi

i was reading the posts and thought that everyone might like to know my heater story, i went off on christmas vacation for around 4 days had a 55 gal bowfront and one big heater. well there were two oscars in the tank one reaching 10
inches and one reaching 8 1/2 well when we returned the heater was in peaces and the fish were acting strange. i didnt do anything to envoke this either before we left i gave them 50 feeder fish and shut the hood checked everything visually and left. now after cleaning out the glass and stuff and doing a 50% water change, they died after about a week. this was a few years ago and im not sure why any of it happened but it did and to this day i have no idea why. just wanted to let everyone know..

I unplug everything before water changes. I have trust issues and don't trust the directions. The top of my heater is bout 3 inches below the surface of the water in case I'm gone on vacation or a weekend trip and the water gets lower and my brother is to lazy to put more in.
