What happened was everyone was telling me to get rid of 3 of my crays....then Jaysee (not sure if you know her) said my only choice was to uthenize them (which i only do to sick or dying fish) because if i returned my WILD crayfish back to the wild if would damage the ecosystem when i havent had them but for 2 weeks and i flew off the handle because i was tired of her telling me that (she told me that 3 times) and i didnt feel it was true. I may be wrong and i may be right idk.

So you caught and kept wild crayfish?? Cool!! If they're fine about being in an aquarium, I think it wouldn't hurt to keep them. I know this one place where I live where there's a machine (like one of those crane games, where you catch the stuffed animal) that has live lobsters in it. You pay $1 to try to get one, and if you do, you go and tell the manager that you got one. It's extremely hard cuz they move around a lot, but if you do get one, then you can do whatever you want with it. Cook it and eat it, or, my version, keep it as a pet. I think you would need a 20 gallon tank for one of those things. They're pretty big!!*crazysmil

Well, they will fight and try to kill each other. Best bet, lots of hiding places. Try clean Terra Cotta Pots and broken pieces of the pots. Manually scrub as much muck off as possible, then soak them in a vinegar and water solution for 2 days then rinse them and put them in a bucket (same bucket) of cold water. As soon as the water gets to room temperature (1-2 days) then you can put them in the tank. They look nice.

Hello; I am curious about something. This is a guess about why the suggestion was made that the wild caught crayfish not be returned to the wild after being in a home aquarium. The thought may be to avoid the chance that the crayfish might pick up a disease or parasite from tropical aquaria found in peoples homes? Just wondering if they gave you a reason why they want you to kill the crayfish in stead of releasing them back to where they came from.

Check the local fish and game laws. It is illegal in every state I've researched to release fish or other game back into the wild (the only exception is for 'catch and release' where the fish or other game is not taken from the wild environment but meerly caught and immediately released).

Hi Fishman! I can see from your posts that you really do want your crays to be healthy. It sounds like those posters were pretty out of line. I agree with Kiara about the multiple hiding places, and I will add one caveat - if you want a chance to keep them all alive, they need as much space as possible, which would mean your ten if the twenty is cracked :)

Good luck with them! Crayfish rock xD

Hello and welcome back. Ill say few things. No matter what you do or get into there is always someone that will dispute or dislike what you do. Take fish keeping. Some take it more serious and little to serious IMO. I agree we should all keep fish to the best we can. But everybodys got to learn threw mistakes that we make when starting out. But glad you came back *thumbsups

ok, so yeah releasing anything you have had in a home tank is not so good for the environment. It's also illeagle, take the zebra muscle invasion or the issue with lion fish in the south east. Those were caused by people. So yeah you cant release

For about a buck you can buy 2-5 terracotta pots, just wash them in hot water and toss them in.

As far as keeping a lobster for a pet, well one they are salt water fish, two they get really big, three they would be pretty advanced salt water fish keeping. When you catch them they boil them and serve them with butter :)

For everyones info, i havent noticed ANY interaction between my crays, i just fed them actually and there antanneas touched and they zipped to there hiding places on opposite sides of the tank. Here's a few pics, The first is of Sheila eating of course, shes my big girl, i put my finger next to her on the outside of the tank for a size show. Im guessing shes about 3 inchs maybe more. the second is of Niko my biggest boy. He is about an inch smaller than Sheila and they both claim seperate hiding spots, as your can see Niko's is his little shark cave which he has burrowed in and Sheila's is the big castle you see behind her. The small light colored one is my other female Lella and as you can kinda see she is about 1 inch and the other darker colored one is a little bit bigger than her named Miki. Reason he's bigger is he has molted and she hasnt yet. I belive the reason my Crays dont fight much is 3 days after Sheila molts, Niko molts and 2 days after that Miki molts so they are mostly hiding sept during feeding time and there travel around the tank time :D
