Hey folks I have no idea if my oscar is male or female but what kind of behavior would indicate spawning? The reason I ask is I recently added a smaller Jag to the same tank (90G heavy filtration), and the behavior from the oscar has changed alot. While there is no aggression yet (will remove jag if this become an issue when the jag is larger) I have noticed the oscar taking a more submissive posture and digging out subtrate. The Jag constantly moves the substrate around but I have never seen the oscar behave this way. I had him rooming with a large rio grande cichlid but the rio had to be removed for its own safety so the oscar appearantly sees something in the jag that it didnt in the rio grande. I know that the 2 shouldnt be able to crossbreed but still curious about the oscars behavior.

Dont beat me up to bad..we all know I experiment and push limits in tank stocking in these experiments.

I've been wondering if my oscars have been intrested in each other for a long time and i hope this gets answered soon but since i've gotten mine they were they same size now they're about 8-9 inches give or take and my albino oscar has always been somewhat larger and more aggressive while my tiger has always tried jaw locking and changing color form dark black to a cool white like the tips of the oscar's fins. My tank is pretty crowded so I figured its been stopping them from doing their own thing but when they want to jaw lock and swim together they clear all the toher fish away. The oscars always are mving my plants out the way and pushing my rocks ass flat down together as they can"sorta how i think my tank got cracked...."

but I Imagine if i had just gravel they would be doing the same as your fish are......its cool to make a thread kill two stones

first poster, I dont know why, it makes no sense. Second poster, get yourself a 75gallon and put a large flat rock in it and set them oscars loose, they wanna spawn!
LOL thanks doomhed ;) . it makes no sense to me either. The jag now has a small tube sticking out of its anal vent, from what I was told males have a small tube structure that extends and comes to a point and the females is flat at the end. Anyone here seen this before? It is definately not a parasite and the fish is healthy and eating very good.

it seems like your oscar might be a female and your jag might be a male. depending on how experimental you feel, get your hands on a large flat rock, start feeding them some richer live foods and see where it goes.
