Just today I was looking at the tank and my beautiful Aul hansbaenschi was acting funny around "what I thought to be a male coloring up Sunshine" well.. he is a she and now she has a mouth full of eggs. and I wittnessed the hansbaenschi spawning with her.

My question is, I know hybrid's are a no no, but there are so many hybrid peacocks out there that are remarkable in beauty. I was just curious if anyone has had these exact same two fish spawn before and what would the offspring look like?
Verse914. maybe you could help? ;)

Thanks for any help!

Well they just finished spawning, I caught the female an put her in a mesh box in the main tank, hopefully she holds until they hatch.. should be a beautiful looking offspring if they make it! :)

P.S.
How long does it usually take for the eggs to hatch? 2 weeks right? it's been so long! :p

Thanks for the reply Aaron :)

Nah, I put the female in a mesh box so hopefully she will hold until they hatch, I am rather excited to see what they turn out to be, mine you I won't sell them to an LFS but keep them for myself to see what the color's turn out to be :)

Thanks again

Yea I know Art but I just can't lower myself to killing fish. Sorry, I love them too much and besides, Aaron said I will most likely have half and half so BONUS! or if I get a cool looking color strain even better ;)

These fish mind you will be future showtank material for when I get my new 185G this summer so they will be in there if they do infact hatch out.

I do need to find a nice male sunshine though :(

Even though some of them "might" look like one parent, and the others look like another parent, they will still have the mixed genes in their blood, so they can pass on different colors to the next generation. Just find a hansbaenschi female and lose the sunshine female (or vice versa). Then youll have some true breed to go around.

Im all against crossbreeds myself. I bred several Aulonocara for a long time so I dont agree with crossbreeding these guys.

Thanks for the info Aaron.

I know, and I am actually against it myself bud, I only have one big tank right now "80 Gal" until I get my fishroom started up in the summer. And reason being I have females in with different males is that well... pretty peacocks are hard to come by around here unfortunlaty, most of my fish came from London Ontario..

SO I will let these guys grow "if she eat's them no biggie" and just wait till I get more tanks.

But I have a question.. You would think that they would naturally crossbreed in nature being that the females pretty much all look identical in general?

I bet that peacock in your link there is half sunshine and half maybe? what I have? it looks like a cross between two totally different peacocks? good point? maybe?

I guess I'll just let nature take it's course and if anything survives in the meantime I will "for sure" hold on to them and not give them away. I know about the whole crossbreeding crap... our petstores are booged with the ugly duckling's :p

hmm.

I was looking at your pics on your site Aaron.. Love em man !

Do you think the Lemon Jake is a cross between a different species? I bet you it is. Looks like it's half sunshine and something else. I bet my fry will look like Lemon Jakes :p

Jay they will not crossbreed in nature because there is only one species of aulonocara at any given biotope in the lake (shoreline, midwater, deepwater, for example Chilumba)
Crossbreeding in the wild is a non-issue. except unless intervened by man (peter davies at Cape Maclear, in the 70's)
cite Malawi Cichlids 3rd Edition, Ad Konings, as well as the Axelrod Cichlid Lexicon

Can't say I firmly believe that Art. There are alot of peacocks an other cichlids in Lake Malawi that look like a half of one species and half of another. I don't think you can say 100% firmly that it can not be done. Fish swim freely and being cichlid's "horney buggers" I think cross breeding is easily prone.

Research it. This is one reason why the lake is so diverse. Fish can't hybridise because they are sometimes separated by vast quantities of water and predators.
In other cases there are similar looking fish (Minos Reef) at the same spot, but the females know what the male looks like so they will not cross.
Try seeing THAT in the hobby.

eye yie capton highliner :p

I infact did do some research. I am not calling you wrong although it sounded like it in my post "friend" :)

I am just saying it IS possible, right?

I am still going to keep the young and see what cool hybrids I get. Like I said, I am keeping them for myself unlike many that flood the market with mutts.

P.S.
I am in need of a nice Male Sunshine, anyone have one for sale close by in my area?

P.P.S. I never intended to cross these two, I thought for sure this female sunshine was infact a male as it was showing yellow starting to show on it's chest so I bought it along with another which I think now is a female as well ... grr..

I was more or less getting all males together first, never intended this to happen nore do I want to make myself out to be a hybrid breeder "I am good with the petstores here, used to breed angels and supply em" ;)

(unrelated, well....sort of )

i heard something about the increased turbulence of the water of lake tanganyika due to increased agricultural and human demands has apparently caused problems with species recognition with many of the cichlid species in certain areas.

i think it was basically saying that hybridization was occuring in a lot of areas where species were having trouble indentifying themselves....

anyone heard anything about that?

Ok Ok OK so I took your advice and released her back into the tank ;)

I am just not the kinda guy to kill something nature took it's course on ya know?

But I respect the hybrid people as I am one myself and gave it much thought and came to the conclusion to release her back into the tank as I really don't want hybrids in my tank "mind you if I had more tanks I probably would keep them just to see what they turn out to be" :)

Still in need of a male sunshine if anyone has one.
