Easier said than done Avalon, easier said than done. This was one of my last straw stories that lead to my intense dislike with my manager was the fact that he made me look like an ass.  This guy came in with an oscar that was beat to hell, had wounds all over his sides, and was really sick looking, just not doing well.  The guy had a water sample, and I tested it, and his nitrites were off the chart, way off the chart, so I know his tank was just cycling.  I told him this, and learned he a newly set up 55 gallon tank that had only been going for two weeks.

I discovered though talking with the guy that he also had Jack Dempsies, Convicts, and a Red Devil in the tank he put the oscar in with. Of course I told him the poor Oscar was probably on the bottom of the pecking order, and all the fish he had were beating up on it. Being beat up, on top of having nitrite posioning, is what was making the Oscar sick. I very patiently explained this to the guy.

Then he accused me of making a mistake with the test kit, saying I did it wrong.  I said, okay, and redid all the tests. They all came out the same.

He started to cajole me.  All the other fish he bought from me were fine, they weren't having any problems. I remember, I helped him when he first came in, gave him an albino oscar and a tiger oscar. He said the Albino was doing great, it was in another tank and not having any problems, and that this was the second tiger Oscar that he had gotten from the store.  The first one he bought from me, he claimed, died within the first week of putting it in the tank. This Oscar he was giving me now was the second oscar. The JD were fine, the convicts were fine, the red devil was fine, how come the oscars weren't?

I told him that he added too many fish in the 55 gallon all at once and that was causing the spike. When I first helped him, he said he was only putting the oscar in the tank. That was one week ago. I was unaware he purchased more fish, he only bought the two oscars from me, and they were going in seperate tanks.  Unfortunately with the other fish picking on the oscars, and the fact that the tank was still cycling made the fish weak and more subceptible to getting sick. I explained to him that fish are individuals as well, and repsond differntly to stress. Also that JDs and Red Devils are known to be a tad more aggressive than Oscars, and probably harassed the Oscar, which only stressed him out more, and made him sick. I don't know what the case was with the first Oscar, but I explained to him that it probably suffered the same fate as this second oscar was, posioning on top of being beaten to hell.

He asked what he should do.  I said he could take the oscar out, put it in a 10 gallon q-tank, get it healthy, and wait until the 55 gallon tank was fully cycled before putting him back in.  Of course he didn't have the time or patience for that, and didn't want to spend the money. I said I can take the fish back, that's not a problem, but I couldn't give him money, store credit, or another fish. I told him that putting another fish in the same situation was only going to give him the same problem.

But he wanted a new fish. He didn't even have a reciet, and this was his second fish that he obviously was mistreating. He kept trying to cajole me, but I wasn't about to send another one of my oscars into hell.  I told him sorry there was nothing I could do for him except help him set if a q-tank if he wanted, or I could take the fish back. That was story policy. I gave him my best, most patient smile while I even put the poor, suffering oscar in some fresh water and rebagged it.

Then this guy has the balls to step into my personal space and say with this charming smile, "Come on Nicole, why don't you just give me another fish." Trying to intimidate me by ording me around. Ohhh, you could bet I was burned up after that. I hate it when customers my name intimately like they know me. It doesn't impress me.

I told him no, sorry, those were his two options.  Of course, he wanted to speak to a manager. Now my manager had been standing on the other side of the counter listening to everything, knowing this guy was giving me a song and dance.  I directed the customer to the manager and stood there. The manager even agreed with me that the nitrites were way too high. Know what the manager did? Gave the dumb mother another fish!! Right in front of my face, gave the guy a new fish!! Then he shoves the sick fish at me and tells me to take care of it.

The customer leaves, all smug of course that he beat the system. And my manager had the gall to turn to me and say, "You should've just given him another fish, I don't have time to agruge like that."

Oh, was I livid, livid!!! What would you have done?

I like to consider Petsmart for staples (food etc) for the price.

I consider BiG Als for largers stuff (filters, thermometers, etc) which tend to be significantly cheaper.

I tend toward the Ma/Pa store for livestock.  I'm beginning to consider buying online also (despite high overnight delivery charges) from reputable dealers just to increase the chances of healthy fish.

Having said that, we have purchased fish from Petsmart.  Of 7 fish purchased, one died within 3 days, the rest are still living.   The main thing is to look in the tank for signs of illness.  All the tanks were overstocked.  I wouldn't want to bring home ich and kill the other fish I have, though.

colesea i'm so sorry, thats just awful.i hate to aruge with someone only to not get my point across,be humilated, and undermined all at the same time.if some one doesn't want to belive you then tell them "oh well sorry your a moron do your homework and see if i'm right".as for the manager get your friends to write false testomonials stating that he encourages clerks to cut corners and mishandle the livestock,it wouldn't be a total lie.anything to get him fired or make his life miserable, just like every creature he sent to it's death out of conveince(give me death or give me convenince)try calling peta the spca, both probably won't be much help but if a store wants to sell living creatures the store should treat them like living things not a shelf item.i really wanted to work at a pet store after i had talked to one of  the employees of a 50,000gal saltwater aqarium in ceasers palace in las vegas(a must see if your ever in las vegas)i asked what it would  take to get a job working on the aquarium.she said that i should try working at a pet store, because that is the only other place where you could deal with such a large volume of fish or water.since then i have been trying to get a job at anyplace with fish except wal-mart.petsmart told me in not so many words your to old(not a school age kid who  can't be bossed around)and never called me back.i called and called went into the store 1to2 times a week, all i saw was new school kids who did more damage than good.i'm glad i didn't get hired cause i'd allready be out of a job.i just simply couldn't sell a fish or any other creature for that matter without knowing it's going to a good home.that why i used to l;ike my local petsmart, the previous clerks allways took the time to talk to each customer and make sure that they knew what the fish would need.for instance they would talk a customer out of a pleco if they couldn't handle it once it grew.people without the proper knowledge of an animal and owners without proper knowledge equal death for sale.

I also work at a PetsMart. Mine isn't bad.  We try and get in alot of unique fish, most are in good health, and we really only have one worthless, stupid employe in my fish department. I really wanted to work at a pet store but the mom and pop shops couldn't support me. ( My truck gets like 12-13 miles per gallon.  :p ... oh-well ) I made 166 bucks on my last check, which is for one week.
Name tag, shirt tucked in, kakies, hair neatly combed, no jewlery in odd places (nose, tongue, the likes), no tattos showing, must display professional apperiances at all times. *snork*
Damn straight!! I hate all of that. espivally the shirts tucked in, it makes me too uncomfortable. Then i bitch and complain and slack of...or atleast for a while

The Petsmart in my town has a large collection of fish, and good deals on tanks, but I will not buy fish there again.  I had a particular fish I wanted, but all of the ones in their tank had white cotton-like markings on them.  I suspected they had a disease, but was told that that is just part of their coloring.  Anyway, three weeks later it had large protrusions coming out of the side of its body, and the cotton like marks were starting to appear on my other fish.  I took the petsmart fish into a quarentine tank and treated all of my fish with the proper medication.  The petsmart fish died a month later, and I lost two of my other fish.  So, I will stick to my favorite lfs that is not as big of a chain as Petsmart is.  They also have people who know their fish and take good care of the tanks.  My Petsmart should take a few lessons from them. ;D

You think working at petsmart is bad? Man trying working at In-N-Out.
(INO for all you non California or las vegas types is a burger place.)
You think it sucks to get yelled at by a customer because they dont understand the nitrogen cycle.  Try getting belittled by a customer because their burger had onions on it, or the fries were too salty. I once had a customer get all pissed with me because the lettuce on his burger wasnt green enough.  You believe that, it wasnt green enough, he then complained to the manager about me because I rolled my eyes at his ridiculous complaint.  The only reason I put up with all that b.s. was the 10.50 and hour they paid me, that was pretty good when I was only 17, but eventually the customers got to me and I had to quit, I am now un-employed and happy as ever.  Bottom line= 1. customers (atleast most of them) suck.  2. Work sucks. (there are exceptions ofcourse, beer taster or professional fisherman would be a pretty sweet job) 3. Petsmart/Petco/Walmart sucks.  (For quality service and healthy fish that is.)
4. Do mom n' pop a favor and buy from them.

Hey why dont we change the name of this website to
