yes I'm going to try that. I need to get another bucket so that I can have one for the new water and one for the old water so I can prepare my water ahead of time.

whats the normal pH of your tank water? livebearers will do much better in 7pH or higher. 7 and higher usually means higher KH and GH valiuse (but not always) and livebearers thrive in high GH and KH values.

I try to keep it between 7.2 and 7.5. I tried adding about a teaspoon of baking soda last water change and that actually seems to have been just the right amount, the tank is currently steady at about 7.3.

ok try to keep it there. always mix WC water to that pH then and be sure its stable before adding it to the tank :) This may mean mixing the water for more than 1 day.
