I use it currently, but once my large tub runs out i will stop. I believe it is good for the first 6 months, or a couple months after u have fully and finally stocked up tank. I do like to use it because i like knowin i have more than one form for filtration, thats why i also made a custom biofilter for my tank. But i might still continue to use it if i have the spare money

My thinking is that if it came with the filter, it came with it for a reason. We are running Fuvals, as well as Undergravels filters on both the 30 gallon and the 75 gallon. The 75 gallon also has a third filter on the back, but I am too lazy to go look at the name of it right now. So the filters that came with carbon in them still do, unless we have another illness outbreak. As soon as it was clear the illnesses were gone for good, back in the carbon went.

Oh, we don't change the Fuval's materials that often. I mean, we change water, but depending on who you believe, the material can last longer between a week up to a couple of months. Now, maybe because we have so many filters, our stuff just might not get dirty as often.

We don't have live plants in my tanks, but do have drift wood for the many plecos. Also, we have a LOT of fish. So my Honey figured that for the sake of our fishes we best keep the carbon in to remove all the waste from the water.

The Tanks are clear as can be. The fishes are happy and healthy. Maybe they would be without carbon, but I am not about to change what is working fine.

My thinking is that if it came with the filter, it came with it for a reason.
Remember though that not all filters come with it. I have two Eheim filters, the 2026 Pro II and the normal Pro (can't remember the # off the top of my head). Neither came with Carbon. They both came with the Ceramic tubes (EFHIMECH), and the normal EFHI-Substrate. Neither of which is carbon-based. Thier both canister style filters like your fluval's. So even suppliers it appears can't seem to agree whether carbon is necessary or not. Reading the Eheim site it states that Carbon and a few other specialized media's they offer can be alternately used for short periods of time, for specific uses. Which seems to be the general consensus here.

Oh, I know that their are tons of different materials that can go inside our Fuval filters. I just remember that when we did not have the carbon in, and were not treating the fish for illness (we where checking to see if the ick was finally gone) both tanks were not as clear.

Then again, we have no plants in our tanks to filter out any waste our fish create or anything the drift wood may or may not be putting in the water. So maybe if we decided to plant the tanks, we would not need the carbon to clean the water.

Oh, the new filter is an Aquaclear 500.
