yea but if evreybody did that it would add up.plus your trying to justify discount nature and the delicate balnce that is maintained.for instance what would the rift lakes look like if some enterprising person started to import rock form these lakes.soon the natural balnce of fish will change because of the loss of habitat.the larger preaditors would prosper while we watched a decline in fish that take to the rocks for shelter, due to the lack of rock cause thy have all been exported for the aquarium trade.

ok so they farm driftwood and rocks.i don't think so.ok lets exclude wood and river rock.now where do slate, lace rock, live rock come from.slate is procured in quarrys which strip mine the earth using giant tractors.giant tractors add to global warming.lace rock come from areas where hot springs with high mineral content collect and harden into rock.live rock is collected by locals in foreign countrys where laws don't prohibit such actions.now admmitedly live rock is cultured by many reputable dealers not all are so concerned about robbing the earth.how about rootwood?do you really think that people in africa are concerned with a constant supply of wood for export probably not they just want to make money to get what little they can.and how about this most reccomend 11/2 -2 pounds of live rock for a saltwater tank,so you could easly use 50 to 100 pounds setting up a 50 to100 gal.tank

Another hazy issue. I think if your going to keep fish, try and keep them in as realistic an environment as possible. Now I myself prefer the look of real rock and driftwood. But to be honest your fish will hide in a plastic made cave as readily as they will a cave you've painstakingly created by hand from real rock. They don't give a sh*t really, they just want a place to hide out. Now I can appreciate what catfishmike is saying. If restraint was everyone's rule of thumb, we'd have a lot less problems. Sure, go ahead and pick up some rock for your tank. You don't have to get it from a river, a nice rock from the middle of a field works just as well. Just be careful and show restraint. But we can't go to off the deep end on the environmentalist kick. All the arguements about hurting the environment to procure this rock and wood your putting in the tank also applies to the fish you already have in your tank. Their snatched up out of the water because of the price they fetch, and this can upset the balance as well.

So, if you already have fish in a tank, which whether you want to admit or not, ties you indirectly to some shady fish practice somewhere, then you might as well make a nice environment for them, because to argue environmental issues over the "furniture" in your tank, and not also on the fish at the same time is a little hypocritical. I don't like poor and damaging practices of fish and/or aquarium "furniture" procurement. But I like keeping fish, and I like making a natural looking environment for them. So I am indeed a bit of a hypocrit...but I'm ok with that, how about the rest of you?

What he said. Good job, madhippoz. I was trying to figure out how to say the same thing.

Heh it boggles the mind. Why do a poll and choose "I don't care", or "undecided". I would assume if you don't do the poll, you don't care, so doing the poll, in order to tell me you don't care seems a tad...redundant. And undecided? Well decide, then do the poll :). "5% of people have no idea whatsoever, according to recent polls". :D just a little bit of brain fluff is all.

I know posting this gets into a very heavy subject but I just can't help it. Element101 how can you feel that way??? I just don't get it. How could poeple be THAT selfish to think that everything on this earth is put there for our own use??? What do you think there is a never ending supply!! Like if everyone had a coral reef tank(reefs, whitch is something that takes hundreds if not thousands of years to establish) That when the supply got thin they would just sprout out in 1 night saying okay come humans to collect me I am her for your personal gain! It just doesn't make since to me. It the same way I feel when people question my veganisum saying "Well don't you believe God put animals here soly for human use" and I say NO they are liveing beings just like us, they have the right to live a full life.

I don't want to get into a religous discussion, just had to give my 2 cents.

well well well sucker ,i mean slacker you still don't get the point first check for sarcasm next time.what i was trying to point out is the fact that all things come from somewhere.wether they are farmed or mined grown or decomposed it comes from somewhere.the whole point was restraint.but instead you were willing to aruge with me for how long?madhippoz has a good point as well but on that same note only 4 of my 50+fish are wild caught.what i was initaly trying to say is don't tear up your local undeveloped area if you want to pick up a pece of wood or two don't disturb the whole riverbed doing it and don't turn over every rock you come across when looking for "that perfect peice"at any rate the reason i argued this point is because there are some people who would do these things and not think twice.and last no hard feelings i just like to aruge.oh and let me give shout out to amazon tankz, i'm with you on that all the way on that i got your back.
