ouch!
thatll be interesting seeing as how turns out with the fish. how long are the salvinis?
found this. look under temperment section Herotilapia multispinosa (Rainbow Cichlid)
so i guess a pair of each might be ok...meaning as they both get kinda big youll be upgrading! woot!
and i think maybe when you aquascape two islands would be really really nice.
2003 AGA International Aquascaping Contest
might help seperate territories too! i think its soo pretty....makes me hate my tank -.-

Thanks for the links, Fuzz!
I'm glad the profile you linked to mentioned keeping the multispinosa with salvini.

Basically I'm told that it's a hit or miss type of thing...whether it be with salvini and firemouths, or some other type of cichlid. The real problems stem from having breeding pairs housed in close proximity to one another---esp. with salvini in the mix---because it is during these times that they will defend a large area (often becoming completely intolerant of anything residing within those boundaries).

That tank you posted the link to with the two 'islands' is pretty amazing!
I was planning on doing something somewhat similar in concept, but I won't be using any live plants...mostly just driftwood, fake plants, and some rockwork. Middle will remain the 'neutral' ground.

Salvini and Multispinosa are in the 2-inch range...maybe approaching 3 inches on a couple of the larger specimens. Multispinosa are slightly bigger, overall, at the moment.

P.S. Katie...I think I may need more than just luck to make this work out!

I guess your going to have to make it work. But the one thing I'm wondering is why? You didnt NEED the rainbows today, I can somewhat understand the salvini if they arent available to you that often. But I still think you should of waited to get fish in general. Getting the tank set up properly and the right equipment is much more important in the long run. SO if at all possible, I would personally return the rainbows tomorow, and maybe even the salvinis.

My reasoning was that the rainbows, being less aggressive than the salvini, would be good to introduce first. But you're right, I still could have waited til' later to get them. Just saw some nice fish and figured I could work things out. Guess we'll have to see what happens...
