ah hell

i know this has been beaten to a pulp, but on the topic of spiking water temperature:

I live in St. Louis where weather is... unpredictable. while i was at work yesterday the outside temp hit 89. my house was all closed up and when I got home, water temp said above 86. both firefish died last night. it wasn't a bad heater, the heater wasn't running. I got the AC running and got my house temp down to 76 pretty quickly, but tank temp is still high (83) and the heater is unplugged. what am I missing here? i know most of you don't run a chiller or anything. I do have a hood on there for now that was there to keep the firefish from jumping out, could this be trapping heat? do mos tof you rely on open top and the evaporative effect to chill the water? I have a new light on the way that will require an open top, but I'm worried about heat now with 130w of light.

thanks

R.I.P. firebolt and fireball :(

Oh no...I'm sorry to hear about the firefish :( That stinks.

Summer is always a challenge with the temperatures and evaporation etc. I have closed tops on my tanks...but that is because if I didn't I'd lose more water than I already do. During summer even if people dont use chillers you have to figure out how to keep the temperature somewhat steady. Some people use the open top and a fan going across the surface...

I would think that the closed top does keep in some heat...but then again with fish like the firefish you can't have the top open. You could use that eggcrate stuff (like a metal mesh that you can cut to the tank size so that no critters can get out, but there will be gas exchange)...see if that makes any difference.

I have AC, so luckily my house rarely gets up that high even in the middle of summer. A lot of fish can handle the really high temps (esp if they dont go up and down very quickly...but i'm guessing since they were pretty new to the tank they were probably a little more susceptible to getting stressed out/shocked...

aha!

finally figured out why ya'll have to top off so much, its these lights!!!! got my 130w power compact up and running and evap at least tripled. on the plus side, the fish love it, the water is clearer, and i'll be ready to add my first ever coral in a week or so. more pictures to come....
