i would think if you have to do water changes frequently on a reef only to supplement calc, maybe it would be cheaper to just buy a bottle of calcium buffer

i should go figure out the price per gallon of saltwater... as in the water itself

If all you have is softies then you don't really need to do anything bar water changes. Water changes are always a subject of debate..... but if you have a large reef with many stony corals, clams, desire for calc algae then water changes are unlikely to be adequate.
What's cheaper, water changes, or supplementing Ca with commercial 2 part ca additives is a good q.
