make sure you use cooked potato, because potatoes are relatives of the nightshade plant and they have many parts that are poisonous when raw.
True, they are members of the nightshade plant, but only the green part is poisonous. Same goes for the tomato. There are lots of other members of this family that are commonly eaten that are not poisonous, such as peppers.

Datura and deadly nightshade (aka belladona) are two of the more common members of this family that are very poisonous, though belladona been used as herbal medicines in the past. I once grew about 80 different types of herbs (including castor beans, which is extremely deadly...but only if it is not processed), and have spent countless hours researching. I've picked up a tidbit of information here and there.

Sorry to go off topic, but wanted to clear up a misconception.

one idea before you go- try getting some free-floating mossy weed and tying it to a string. then every few days, snails will congregate and you can rinse them out with water changes. (it's more of a control method but it seems to work)
